I believe that tithing means giving 10% of your income to do God's work, so this would include giving to charities that help the poor or sick or whatever. But every church I have been to seems to interpret tithing as meaning to give 10% to the church (I guess other charitable giving would have to be above and beyond that). What do you think, and can you back it up with some scripture?

Deuteronomy 12:5-8--
5 But YOU ARE TO SEEK THE HABITATION OF YOUR FATHER; THE HOUSE OF YAHWEH--the place which Yahweh your Father shall choose out of all your tribes to establish His Name--and THERE YOU MUST GO.
6 THERE you must bring your burnt offerings and sacrifices, your TITHES, and special gifts you have vowed to give, your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your herds and flocks.
7 There, in front of Yahweh your Father, you and your families shall eat, and you shall rejoice in all that you have put your hand to do, because Yahweh your Father has blessed you.
8 YOU MUST NOT AT ALL DO AS WE ARE DOING HERE THIS DAY--EVERY MAN DOING WHATEVER IS RIGHT IN HIS OWN EYES.

Duet 12:11 Then there shall be a place which Yahweh you Father shall choose to cause his name to dwell there; thither shall ye bring all that I command you; your burnt offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the heave offering of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the Yahweh.

4. He will judge among the nations, and will rebuke many people; they will beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation will not lift up sword against nation, neither will they learn war anymore.
5. O house of Yaaqob, come and let us walk in the light of Yahweh.
6. You have forsaken your people, the house of Yaaqob, because they are filled with customs from the east; they are soothsayers like the Philistines, and they are pleased in the children of strangers.

When I attended church and tithed, my pastor said you should tithe where you are being fed... meaning wherever you are getting "spiritual nurturing". If you get it in the church... tithe to the church. If you're getting it from TBN or a radio ministry... send the tithe there. Most pastors will say to tithe to the local church because it costs a lot of money to operate a church and there's a need to stay on budget... especially when their salaries are normally 50% or more of the budget. What salesman is going to tell his customers to give his competitors their money?

Read around the area of Acts 10 and 15 about the counsel at Jeruesalem. There is a letter sent out from them to gentiles telling them they are not expected to keep old testiment law. Jersus gave them this right under the powers of binding and loosing, you'll have to pull out your concordance to find the chapter and verse on those, maybe around Mat. 18. Tithing is at best old testiment law. We are not bound by that rather the NT suggestion that we give what we can give joyfully.
If you attend a church that pushes tithing and meets in a large beautiful building then you are associating with immature christians who are not likely to grow. You might be better off somewhere else.

ON THE OTHER HAND When I started out in business it was slow going and I read about Laterno who gave 90% and business soared, and so I said God I will give you 20% of every dollar I make on this endeavor. My business began to grow and I kept giving 20%. 10 I gave to the small church I attended that did many good things with the money it received and 10 which I gave to help see to it that children everywhere have clean drinking water. My business continued to grow. Unfortunately I was having a huge impact on the works of evil (I counseled adolecent youth) and when the level and methods of evil began to feel dreadfully attacked they then attacked back, but that is another story.

ok.
tithing, was a requirement of the Law. As the law was replaced with a new covenant, the new rule is 'when giving gifts of mercy, do not let your right hand know what your left hand is doing'.
Meaning, do not go around with your head high saying, 'look what good I have done'.
Tithing for a Christian is to be done from the heart, and is to be done, not as a specific %, but how much a persons heart is so inclined.
If one decides to give to a church, that is their business. If one desires to give to the poor? that is their right.
Just remember, giving wantonly to those who have no desire to know God, or to learn his reqiurements, is not a scriptural practice. Jesus said that if someone does good to the "least of these my brothers" than they have done it to Jesus.
Key word here is brothers.
Jesus further defines who his 'brothers' are.
They are those who are doing the will of the father in the heavens. That will? to listen to the son.

Mal 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

storehouse in this scripture refers to temple- family- home - this tells me that I need to being my tithes to where my church "family" is- the purpose of the tithe is to support the church home- to provide a place for my church family to meet and fellowship (that there may be meat in the house- teaching- the Word of God- these things need to be provided for and that is the purpose of the tithe).
Anything above the ten percent tithe, going to outside charities is considered an offering and the amount is based on your personal discernment.

i believe that the church is the kingdom of God. So therefore we should tithe to the poor, the opressed, the widows and the orphans. I believe that giving to a church (building) is okay. I like lights and airconditioning and heat. But not solely. I also give to christian radio, because I get filled with the spirit and truth there so I like to support them.

"what you do for the least of these you do for me"

The tithe is a sacrificial worship unto God, it is to acknowledge that God given you the money in the 1st place through your employer or client so to reflect that we give back to God 10%.

since its a sacificial gift, we should not worry how it is spend.
for eg. if you give a gift away, you don't tell your friend in what manner she is to use it. What the church does is entirely in their hands. However money you give above tithes like offering & mission giving, you can have a say.

Tithing was normally giving your 10 percent to the church.
Other giving is expected on top of the titheing.

A tithe is, literally, a "tenth part" and refers to either prescribed or voluntary contributions from one's income to their religious community. Tithing can also be used to refer to systematic, charitable giving generally without any reference to some exact or expected percentage.

The word, “tithe,” does not appear in the New Testament. Therefore, people contend that they are under the New Covenant and are not liable to pay the Old Covenant tithe.

People do attempt to debate the issue of obeying Old Testament law by quoting Jesus in Matthew 5:17, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. (KJV)

Although the New Testament does not mention any form of the word, it certainly deals with the principle of giving to God. In fact, the New Testament often suggests that people give more than just one-tenth of our income.

Concerning offerings to the church leaders in Jerusalem Paul wrote that each person should " Now therefore perform the doing [of it]; that as [there was] a readiness to will, so [there may be] a performance also out of that which ye have.(2 Corinthians 8:11). (KJV). He also stated, “Upon the first [day] of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as [God] hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come."(1 Corinthians 16:2) (KJV). For some people that may mean giving more than the tithe.

Paul was thanking the Philippian church for gifts they had sent when he wrote, “But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things [which were sent] from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God."(Philippians 4:18) (KJV) As you give to the church you need to consider that your tithes and offerings please God and are like a fresh bouquet of roses to His senses.God likes it when people give toward supporting His kingdom work.

"Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, [so let him give]; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver." (2 Corinthians 9:7) (KJV)

Paul warned about trying to give to God without love for Him in your heart." And though I bestow all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing." (1 Corinthians 13:3) (KJV)

Giving to the church or to help the needy is credited to your spiritual bank account only if it is accompanied by and inspired by love for God and love for others.

Paul also mentioned benefits to those who give to God’s work. "But this [I say], He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly; and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully." (2 Corinthians 9:6) (KJV) The principle of reaping in exchange for giving is firmly established. How much you reap is determined by how much you give and the spirit in which you give. (2 Corinthians 9:7)
