I am going to make a recipe that calls for uncooked Spaetzle. I do know that it's a German dumpling but you should be able able to buy it uncooked. Does anyone know anything about this dumpling or if there is a substitute that I can use in it's place?I am not making it from scratch,I don't have that kind of time when it's comes to preperation.Anyone? Any advice?

I am of German heritage and we made spaetzle all the time but I have never ever seen it for sale becuse all it is is a semi-liquid flour dough that is gently poured into a large stew pot of lightly salted and vigouroulsy boiling water. As each ladlefull sinks to the bottom it stretches out into a thick noodle-like strip and hardens up in the boiling water until it is cooked and then ladled out. It is then served with salt, pepper and melted butter.

Spaetzle is like pasta but different. You can buy it dried in shops in Germany and it needs to be soaked in very hot water, rather then boiled. I am not sure if you can buy spaetzle in the UK. I bring mine back from Bavaria!

Spaetzle is made from dough which is grated into hot water and kept moving so that it is like rough and uneven bits of spaghetti. I think you might get a similar texture with fresh spaghetti torn into bits.

You do get dumplings too, but spaetzle are definitely more like pasta.
