There are lots of things to consider, and this is a "loaded" question. First how old are you, and what is your relationship to this guy? If an older male, as in uncle, cousin, dad, grandad, the rules alter slightly from possibly boyfriend, fiancee, or husband.
If his taste is very rare, are you financially equipped for any purchase, AND the possibility of it being rejected? Is the only way you can get this person's attention by buying them off? I am not sure it is a healthy relationship, it is based on "things" and not love.
I suggest you buy them a calendar with old master's works, and write special thoughts on the date you would like them to remember something about you.
