"...THAT WHICH SETS US APART FROM OTHERS IS AUTOMATICALLY A DELUSION." (capitalized for emphasis)

Reverend Christopher Heath is a chaplain at an Australian psychiatric hospital, where he encounters patients suffering from religious delusions. The difference between a mental illness and a religious delusion he finds hard to define. He has come to the conclusion that religious delusions set the believer apart from others, any others.

Rev. Heath further said that, in a world of terrorism, this delusion can be used to justify the murder or torture of others. It can also lead to the feeling that one needs to convert the world to one's own faith. A religion that emphasizes embracing all human beings escapes the delusional framework and falls in line with Jesus work, as he freely interacted with the socially unacceptable persons of his day.

solid question, and the respond would be counted on the denomination of the answerer. A Roman Catholic will say that the Anglican Episcopate is invalid and apostate (QED). what's thrilling approximately this place is that the Vatican is pondering finished communion with numerous branches of the Anglican custom and would would desire to average this stance interior the very close to destiny. I'm having a difficult time with a man that gives himself or obtains the title of Reverend, Priest and Chaplain yet doesn't seem to have a foundation in any direction. He can claim all that he desires to claim and come to any conclusion he wishes but he himself has tagged himself unto the exact religious delusion he finds hard to define while he himself references himself to the Divinity of what? With three specific titles as leader in three specific areas of Divinity teachings why can't he get his mind wrapped around anything specific. He is embracing something or he would drop the titles. He needs to truly get his own mind wrapped around something certain to tap dance on a diagnosis. He automatically sets himself apart in each one of his titles but where? To me it is typical of what I call psyco-babble. I do believe he would do great a party where everyone just threw confetti for no rhyme or reason. Just whatever and have a ball Reverend.

I believe what the Reverand is trying to explain is that it simply our delusion to think we are set apart from others. basically, we are all one bread one body. we exisit together and are not remote. we do not live on an island but our thinking thast we are set apart from others breeds the delusion that we are better than, or worse than others. we create the delusion that we are set apart. it always fascinated me as i worked with the mentally ill for over two decades and realizeed, quickly that all learned in textbooks needed to be dissolved if i were to succeed as people cannot be diagnosed, evaluated or treated if looked at as different or catorgorized. it is much easier to believe that we are smarter. more in touch or different per say, but once realized that is our delussion and in fact we breathe off our differances, it becomes harmony. perhaps the world is in the state it is as we follow these delusions rather than try to motivate our selves to see the works of God in each other ans bend to them. Once we buy into the delusion Rev. speaks of, we then fall prey to terrorism, poverty, injustice, war and the ugliness of life. we lose the simple teachings of the beattitudes. whatsover we do to others, that we do unto him. i doubt all this seperatism was taught be Jesus, but i rest knowing in the end he alone will prevail. if more politicians spent time on their knees rather than in war rooms, what a better place.

I'm not sure I totally agree with it. I would say a delusion is when your beliefs are determined by anything other than experience and rational thought.

I do agree with the general concept that religious dogmatism is a mental illness.

Interesting, I think the quote needs more context though. After reading your explanation, it makes more sense, but in and of itself, it isn't enough. Does that mean that someone who just wants to be a hermit is delusional? Or someone who feels that they are not a messiah but that they have an insight that others should know about is delusional also?

I think you've taken that quote WAY out of context. Even that quote by itself doesn't mean what you are trying to make it say. By itself, that quote says "anything that causes you stand aloof from your brothers is a delusion..."

Next time you want to try to make a case for something this silly, do some better research and present a better example.
