My dogs do that and my cats eat dog food as well. Sometimes it's a case of only one being available, but mostly dog foods aren't enriched nearly as much as Cat foods are and usually (to the dog) don't taste as good.
Be warned tho, a dog who eats Cat food CAN and WILL develop a disease called Pancreatitis which is a very painful and somewhat expensive condition to remedy. Dogs can also get this condition from eating excessive table scraps and fats.

One of the reasons, beyond taste, may be the dogs teeth.
Our dog had very sensitive teeth, regualr dog and even puppy food was to hard for her, the cat food however, came in smaller pieces and was usually not as hard to crunch.
I would recommend you check with your vet. We let the dog have the dry cat food, since it was down for the cats all the time, but supplemented her diet with canned dog food...to make sure she was getting the proper nutrients.

Cat food is especially yummy to dogs, but is very bad for them to eat. Keep it out of yor dog's reach, even if you have to put it in a room your dog can't get to. Some people will put their cat's food up high, say on top of a counter, so the dog doesn't get into it.

Your dog may not like the taste of its own food, so it wants to try something new. My dogs, after getting fed the same thing over and over and over, they won't eat it, but then if we give 'em a different type of food, they'll scarf it down.
Myabe try some new dog food if you don't want that happening. Good luck.

Dogs eat anything. The cat food probably smells better and tastes better. However, the nutritional value would not necessarily be sufficient for the dog.

Maybe it's the brand of dog food you're using.
Try Pro Plan, Authority, Nutro or King Canin

My dog does the same thing. I think it must have more flavor. My dog is a super picky eater anyway and doesn't even like to eat most human food.

Cat food is "sweeter". your dog must have a sweet tooth. A little now and then would be a treat for the dog. Let him enjoy. :-)

I think its because they like the taste of it, or it could be because its not their own food so obviously its better than their food.
