GERMAN SHEPHARDS ARE EXCELLENT WITH CHILDREN. THEY ARE VERY LOYAL AND OVER - PROTECTIVE ALSO.

I HAVE ONE FOR 15 YEARS GROWING UP. MY DOG NEVER BIT US AND IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH TO TRAIN THEM. THEY ARE ALSO PROTECTIVE OF THE HOME, BUT GREAT WITH COMPANY, WHETHER FAMILIAR OR UNFAMILIAR.

They are great with children and very loyal to their familys if raised correctly. I have owned German Shepherds or Shepherd mixes for the past 30 years and couldn't imagine owning any other breed. They only problems are the bad hips and that can be eliminated by not buying from back yard breeders I have a female thats 5 she came from the SPCA and has terrible hips but I love her and wouldn't trade her for nothing just have to deal with the problems as they arise.

Most GSD are very good with children, and extremelly loyal. The one I had as a child was the most wonderful dog you can imagine. They are very easy to train, and laid back enough to do great inside.

That said, you still need to do your research. This breed has paid the price for becoming to popular. There are breeders out there that breed any dog to any b*tch, and end up selling sick, bad tempered puppies.

And the GSD have really become popular as Schutzhund dogs. While this is a really great dog sport, and most people who are involved would never sell a "hard" dog to a novice, I have seen it happen. A hard dog is just like it sounds, they are hard to train, and tend to be born with a bad attitude. These dogs are wonderful for police dogs, drug dogs, or hard core dog sports, but a very bad choice for a household pet!

When you start to look for a puppy, make sure the breeder ask you lots of questions. They are not trying to make you mad or anything like that, they are trying to make sure you get the best puppy for your family. Be honest with them, and you will end up with a great dog!

German Shepherdand are the most loyal, trustworthy and most used dog in all of the world. i myself has one of these great dogs as a pet. unfortunetly, these dogs need much practice, love, dedication and obediens classes. if you have kids, they can be good playmates. they can be good guard dogs, so that's another pluspoint.

I've owned GSD's for most of my life. I can tell you from experience as a handler and a trainer that these dogs are very loyal to their handler/owners. With children, they are known for being forgiving and accepting of their packs kids. Outsiders are a different story. Because they have tendency of being over protective of their packs (especially as they get older), if your kids are playing rough with eachother or with neighbors, the dog will see this as a threat and will do whatever they have to to stop the "attack' or game. Training these dogs is usually easy because they are very smart. Almost human smart. however, because they are smart, they will think of ways of getting out of training or getting out of what you want them to do. Currently, there are two ways of dividing GSD's: this includes Conformation standards and Working Lines. Most GSD's from american bloodlines are Conformation dogs because of their appearance and temperments of being nice and welcoming. However, they are known for not being good for protection work. Working lines or European lines are known for being rougher, less pretty and more demanding than american conformation dogs. MOST, not all, of teh GSD's used for protection or guard work are from european working lines. For example, police departmetns in teh USA will NOT purchase dogs from american lines but instead will opt for european lines for their reliance on teh working temperment. Shedding is also an issue. GSD's constantly shed their coats. It is best to groom them everyday or every other day because of the build up of hair. If you are a first time owner, i personally recommend getting a younger dog and raising him/her. If you've owned larger dogs before, I recommend you get a older dog (2-5 years). The prices vary significantly because of bloodlines and training. This site, www.kraftwerksk9.com has some beautiful dogs but the prices reflect it. I am jsut givving it to you as an example of working lines are and how they differ from conformation lines. They hae great pictures and videos for you to see how dogs are trained.

They are good dogs but due to careless breeding - they have health problems like hip dysplasia, broad tail issues and others.
