If two young people who have been together for 2.5 years (and are totally positive about making this sort of committment) really want to get married right away, then is it possible to get married, legally only, and then have a religious ceremony and party with family and friends somewhere down the road?

yes it is quite possible....

go and get legally married and then down the track have a great party to celebrate with your family and friends.

As fr having a religious celebration you will need to speak to a minister of your religion to find out if that can happen.

Often in times of war or other times of upheaval people do exactly that, they marry now and later when things settle down they have the wedding celebration. Many people who elope do exactly that as well.....

So not only is it possible it is often done.

Yes, I'm sure a lot of people do this too. I think this is actually a great idea. You want to get married so you go ahead & then later you can take your time planning for a ceremony with friends & family. It's probably a lot less stressful too. Good luck.

As a minister I have this occur regularly. All legal marriages are done with the signing of the marriage license with two witnesses. The ceremony is only a ceremony in front of God and whomever else you choose to be there.

That said unless you are Catholic, most religions recognize civil marriages.

I will gladly do a re-commitment ceremony for those that have already married. Many people do this it is not unusual.

Good luck and God bless.

Although many people do things like this these days, it's really not proper, as per etiquette, to have re-run wedding ceremonies (yes, even if you call them vow renewals, they are still inappropriate). You get one wedding per marriage.

You may, however, have very large and formal anniversary parties whenever you like during your marriage, and those can include a tiered cake and dancing and such. This is an appropriate option if you feel you missed out on celebrating enough, after the actual wedding.

Yup, my next door neighbor just had the religious ceremony and party last week.

They got married legally 2 weeks ago.

Have a great time!!!!

My husband and I also renewed our vows on our 5 year wedding anniversary.

The first wedding was traditional, the second was a Luau.

Yeah. Why wouldn't it be? People do it all the time. Especially when they can't afford the religious ceremony. The state issues marriage licenses. The church just recognizes the union.
