He, as the person stated before me, if you get a cheap futon and a cheap matrress, yes, it will be uncomfortable since they are usually held up with a metal bar frame under the mattress. HOWEVER, if you get one that is supported by a wooden frame, then you wont have that issue. I might suggest IKEA, they have great frames and nice mattessses that will NOT cost you a fortune.
I've included a link to the IKEA website that might help you out....

Futons are just fine to sleep on.. and no they are not bad for your back if you get one with a 9" innerspring mattress in it. Futons pads can be made with just padding or the innerspring mattress, which is like a sofa bed mattress... price is not drastically different... approimately $50 more. I am a furniture salesperson and sell many, many futons.. almost daily. Good Luck !

Futons are good for saving space.
I used one for year and didnt have any back problems,
though dont get a metal one apperantly those arent comfortable and possible dangerous, use a wooden one like i did.
Best off all fold up to create a pretty comfy sofa and provides you with extra space.

Get a wooden frame and a good futon matress. Otherwise, it's not good for your back. Otherwise, build a platform bed and put a matress on top.

Excellent choice , you can find higher end futtons that run $500.00 + My daughter used hers for college for three years , she just earned her degree and is trading it in for a sofa.
