You really didn't give a lot of details about what type of cosmetic work you had done, and I dont really know what you mean when you say "private" cosmetic work. And sugery is usually not involved in normal cosmetic work. You need to give more details.

However, I can tell you that in my office, if we do cosmetic work such as veneers or crowns, we require that the patient looks at the work and approves it before it is put on permenantly. That is the time to make changes, not after it is put on. Now, if the problem is the bite, not being able to floss between them, or something functional, then by all means he should look into that. But if it is simply a matter of not being happy with the looks, that should have been discussed before the work was put on. Usually the only thing to do after that point, is to remove the crown or veneer and remake it, which would cost an additional lab fee.

If it is composite fillings, those are easily repaired and changed, but if you approved the work before you left the office, he may charge you a small fee to redo them.

As I said, you didn't give alot of details, so it is hard to answer this question properly.

The best time to complain about cosmetic dental work is before you leave the surgery. I know, I used to be a prosthadontist - (Dental Technician) making crowns bridges and inlays. The golden rule is allways to be sure that the tooth you are paying for firstly actually looks like a tooth - Not a Procelain or Gold dust bin lid as we used to refer to them.

Secondly you need to be sure that your new crown fits - If you leave the surgery biting high - In other words your jaw will not shut completely or your teeth are not occluding correctly you will be looking at problems.

""Golden Rule" Have you ever heared the term "Professional Deformity" This is a psychological term that relates to our willingness to attribute expertise and to put our confidence in white coated professionals. At the end of the day you Dentist will not be in the profession for the fun of it or to save peoples smiles it will be to make money. This may sound a little cynical but have you ever met a poor dentist? Be sure that if you need cosmetic work replaced unless it is faulty their will be a cost.

If you are experiencing problems seek advice from the CAB or contact the family practicioners committee - This normally strikes fear into the hearts of dental professionals.

Finally - Many people rush away from dental surgeries with sub-standard work particuarly on Anterior (Front) Teeth. having had a problem, people are usually so glad that the ordeal is over they just want to get away as fast as they can from the surgery.

Stop take a breath

Look at the colour - Does it match/

Does it fit - Is the crown / Bridge/ Inlay / Veneer loose/ or can you feel any gaps.

Does the tooth look like a tooth? How does it compare with your other teeth in terms of shape and size.

Is it trapping food?

When you are chewing can you feel your new crown touching the tooth below it?

Any dental restoration must have 3 things Fit, Form, and Function. If you are confident that you have all of these pay the dentist and walk away with a great set of nashers - If not, my advice to you is to complain early in the process - I.E. Prior to leaving the surgery.

Hope this helps

Simon

You would have to ask the dentist. I'm sure they all have their own policies for "un-doing" procedures that are unsatisfactory.
