Why is there a need to control anything? Or more to the point, why is there a need to answer every question we may ask. I accept that there are some questions we don't have theanswers to and some we may never have the answers to.
I think religion is great for people who need answers, personally, I don't. It's not that I don't care or that I'm not curious, I just accept the concept of the unanswerable and go on with my life.
To be frank, I find that doing good (defined as behaving in a socially positive manner) because you respect other human beings is far more noble than doing good from fear of hell or the reward of heaven. I do good becuase its the right thing to do, not for punishment or reward.

You have as much control as society allows you. Without control there would be anarchy, and each person would be made to fend for themselves. George Orwell's 1984 is a classic novel about just how little control you actually have over your world, and the modern world is simply a place where we are given just enough freedom for us not to chaffe against.

We control very little. Some people like the mythology of God to be real so that they can pretend they have some control.

I am in control of my household, it is my own little world which chaos usually does not interfere. I clean when I want, I make food when I want, I do laundry when I want. But once I get outside, the world sucks me up and my control has been jeopardized.

I have control over the same stuff you control. Probably more, because I don't turn over control voluntarily to unproven gods or godesses.

I control myself.
Or at least, I can control myself, but right now other things are controlling me (i.e. stress, insecurity, etc.)
I believe in some sort of maybe not a higher power, but some universal force. I believe that things come our way in life that were pre-planned, but it is up to us to decide what to choose when that "pre-planned" opportunity (i.e. a job, love, etc.) comes our way.

actually, this is hard for any human to learn. I think as we get older and wiser we actually see how little we do control. I can't make myself breathe or make my heart beat, I can't make anyone believe like I believe, I can't make someone love me, I can't make time stop so I can rest when I have had enough.. but I have learned to let go and let God.
I know this question was directed at those who don't believe, but I think this question applies for all of us. forgive me for breaking your rules.

I control my actions, sort of. I control my destiny, kind of. I control my life, barely!
