That's a good question.
I would guess because most daughters are "daddy's little girl" so it's only fair that the son gets mom's attention.

During the childhood stage, around the ages of 5 and 6, the child bonds more to the parent of opposite sex. As some fathers are still unsure what to do with a girl, and adore her a mother will use the effort to teach the son what she feels most important. It is not because the father is bad to his son, it is that tthe father expects more from a son and pushes them harder, by instinct. It is not brother vs. sister here, but nurture vs. nature.
My husband's mother died when he was 17 of cancer, she spent her time showing him how to care for himself, and trying to instill all the things she wanted him to practice as a man. He built a bond with her that has survived death, and still he holds a candel to her.. His father and him have been at odds ever since her death. A lifetime of resentments and harshness builds walls between the father figures and sons. And mom is always there to baby her baby.

OMG do I even want to get into this? I was just in a relationship where the Mother was a friggin psycho. She had loved me like a daughter for 3 years when she figured her Son and I would never get together but as soon as we really did she freaked out big time. She would brush his hair while I was in the room and talk about how great his x's were even though they broke his heart and cheated on him numerous times. It finally got so bad she called the cops and tried to have me kicked out. Well, to her dismay the cops did NOT make me leave. Now mind you this guy was 33 years old. I dont really call that a close relationship though for him and her I call it more of a bunch of psychos. My opinion...ya Neo...your Mom was and IS a friggin psycho!!

Hard one.
Maybe its because sons appreciate the nurturing more. With daughters, mothers may have a tendency to say "Ive been through that, so I know. When I was your age....." and daughters may just get tired of that.

I think it depends on the mother & son. I think mothers & daughters can be just as close.

DONT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY BUT ITS THE OPPOSITE SEX ATTRACTION. ITS NATURAL. THEY ESPECIALLY DO IF YOU HAVE BREAST FED THEM WHEN THEY WERE NEWBORNS. THEY LOOK UP TO THEIR MOTHER AND WANT THE SINCERITY AND TO BE AS SENSITIVE TO OTHERS. AND THEIR MOTHERS WONT BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF THEM WHEN THEY ARE BAD,LIKE THEIR FATHERS WOULD. HA HA
