Its not just the nicotine. Its also the other 50+ chemicals they out in cigarettes. Also the main problem is habit.
We have been used to having body sensations which we translate as 'my body needs something, which we have attempted to satisfy by having a cigarette.
When we try to stop smoking, we still get these 'my body needs something' sensations, and we still feel that we want a cigarette. We have to train our body to be more selective. When we feel we need something, we have to work out what it is that we actually need.
A glass of water is an excellent substitute if nothing else comes to mind, as it helps with the clearance of the toxic substances in our body. Another good substitute is a bag of salted peanuts, used in combination with the water.
Another thing to do is to find an activity which occupies the mind or body. Go swimming - nobody wants to smoke while they are swimming. Slowly, as our body adjusts and translates the 'want something' feelings into something other than cigarettes, then the feelings begin to go away. We know its not a cigarette that the body really needs, because as soon as we've had one we still have the feeling, and want another!

I smoke. I started when I was 14 years old. I am now 49. I also did it to make me look "cool". LOL. But like you I'm hooked. I tried quitting a few times. The last time I quit, I quit for about 2 years. The longest I've quit. I just recently went back to smoking in May of this year. I just couldn't resist. I now smoke about 1 pack a day of menthol cigarrettes.

i smoked a pack and a half a day, 3 years ago I quit. I started 3 months ago again, and got up to a pack a day. Now again I am not smoking, and have not smoked for 3 weeks. The first week is hell, and you try to find any reason to get mad at the world and light one up, but resist the urge. I used no patches, no gum, just will power. It is possible, just do it. Stop hanging out with smokers, get rid of all ash trays, and do something else, in those times where you used to light up. Brush yout teeth, floss your teeth. Try to avoid replacing food for smokes. Or you will balloon up like I did the first time, I gained 120 lbs. have lost it since, but it was not fun.

I grew up around smokers. My parents, aunt, cousin and uncle all smoked.
I started becasue I was smoking marijuana, and needed to cover the smell. Yes, I am addicted--think I'm near to beating that, though--to the point that marijuana is eighteen years in the past, but my last cigarette was yesterday.

I've gone between three cigarettes (low end, trying to quit) to a pack and a half per day. I've even chain smoked.
I began in 1988, and the longest I've gone is seven years, but I always come back.

For what it's worth, the nicotine content in the US manufactured cigarettes has been increased 10% in the past decade. The tobacco companies are nothing but high-priced drug dealers.

Yes, I started about five years ago. I was against smoking, but not repulsed by it at that time. I started dating a woman who was a smoker and started smoking socially. Before I knew it, I was buying cigarettes for myself. I smoke a pack to a pack and a half a day.

I started to smoke 35 years ago at age 10 and not once stopped. I am addicted and know it. I was addicted to drugs and quit them 15 years ago but I can not stop smoking and I have tried everything. I think because I LIKE it and it does not cause me any trouble ( with the law) like drugs did I think it's OK

Hello,

I have a story to tell you. It's about a wonderful man. A loving and caring father and grandfather. He'd been smoking all of his life. He was a great person. A good person... A kind person, who unfortunately had a bad habit... smoking. By his mid-50's, he was slowly getting sick, and it progressed rapidly. He quite smoking in his early 60's. He was, from the age of 66, connected to an oxygen tank and his mobilty critically reduced. He was in and out of hospital during those years. He couldn't even go in the shower by himself. Here was this loving man who was becoming incapacitated. He rarely moved from his lounge chair in the dining room, as his stength wouldn't allow him to. In the early 2004 he was hospitalised, by mid-year he was in rehab, and on 27th September 2004 he passed away in front of his wife and his eldest daughter.

His daughter still mourns. She was always there, when she wasn't working she was by his side and with her mother. His grandson was with her almost everyday too, to comfort her as she was distressed and emotional.

I am the grandson. and to this very day I mourn a great man. He achieved so much in his life.

My Grandfather was aged just 69 when his life ended, leaving his loving wife, 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. His life was drastically cut short due to smoking and his lungs breaking down. His lungs were only working at 18%. 18% !

Smoking is one of the worlds leading causes for disease and loss of life... preventable loss of life. If there is any good that can come from smoking, that's learning from our mistakes and banning it completely.

I know it may be hard, and you're addicted, but please, I beg you, don't let the same thing happen to your family. It's not fair on them. This is just one story of thousands around the world. My heart is still broken... i didn't know my Pop before he was sick. I'm 19. And my strongest memory... an image I will never forget, is my Grandfather on Christmas Day 2003. He could barely move. It was a hot Australian day, and he was so sick. I would glady have taken my life to save his. I loved him so much... I still do.

I'll inform you what~ I have smoked cigg's on and off for a minimum of 35 years. When my wellness became unhealthy and out of the blue~ Im inhaling air and its NOT going to my lungs to provide me Oxygen~ ITS A HUGE FREAK OUT! When I was once smoking weed~ it made me think like i used to be now not in manipulate of myself and I felt very paranoid. It was once like being unsleeping in a residing hell for me. I best smoked weed for much less then one million 12 months. But there are occasions I nonetheless leave out the peace and quietness of smoking a cigg. however I dont wish to ever enjoy that lack of air in my lungs ever once more. I under no circumstances have cared an iota approximately the melanoma from the ciggs~ its the lack of oxygen. I bet you can must learn what I wrote, and delete my solutions on account that I would NEVER ever select both any further~ yrs in the past, it could were the cigg. even though.
