It's what your body needs. The brain is amazing. When you're low on salt, you crave salty foods. When you're low on certain vitamins, the body actually craves the foods that contain those vitamins! So, when you are cold, your brain wants to reinforce that your hot beverage is a good choice, so it tells you that it tastes that much better. If you're adequately warm, you don't want to overheat, so a cool refreshing beverage will taste better. As far as why a particular beverage tastes better cold, it could be learned. For example, coffee doesn't taste that good to me cold. I love it hot. That is probably a learned preference.

I am not positive on this but I believe that we grew up with that connotation.. Tea is to be drank when hot so it tastes better when hot(except iced tea).. coffee when it is hot, (except iced coffee), etc In Bangledesh and other areas the water is always drank at normal temperatures because the kids(or whatever) did not grow up with ice cubes, etc so they might not know what cold water tasted like

Cold drinks are chilled. When you are hot and tired a cold drink will do. It has more taste and flavor.

I like hot coffee. But, right now I'm drinking a flat room temperature Mountain Dew and I MUST say, I wish it was cold!
