There are several great brushes out there that will help get the fur out depending on what type of dog it is!

1. If your dog has short to mid-length hair (e.g. Labrador, Retreiver, German Shepherd etc.) hair then the best brush on the market is the FURminator it can be a little on the expensive side but for the amount of hair it gets out, it is great

2. If the dog is long haired (e.g. yorkie, westie, shih tzu etc.) the best thing to use is a slicker brush theses are very inexpensive and they also work on short haired dogs just not as well as the FURminator.

As well as these other good brushes are shedding blades (be careful not to scrape the skin though!), undercoat rakes, and coat kings for dogs with wirey coats.

There are all different makes and models of these brushes for all different dogs and budgets.

I would reccomend brushing at least once a week, then you should start to notice a difference. Also a bath every few months helps to get out the loose hairs, although they need a good brush afterwards otherwise the hairs can get all over your carpets!

If in doubt take your dog to a local reputable groomer, they will usually be able to help you.

Everyone has said it, but you should brush your dog at least 15 minutes every day to help loosen the dead fur and pull it out. Dpeneding on what kind of coat your dog has, different kinds of brushes could be more or less effective. For a long haired dog, a soft slicker brush and comb work well. For short haired dogs, a shedding blade or a rubber curry brush work well.

How often do you bathe/groom your dog? Too frequent bathing could cause excessive shedding. Dogs with no specific medical skin problems should be bathed/groomed no more than once every four to six weeks. Too much bathing dries out the skin and hair.

A good quality dog food can help reduce shedding too. There are a few good commercially available brands out there. Nutro Natural Choice or Nutro Max are good, as is Blue Buffalo.

It is the shedding season for dogs at the moment and that lasts a few weeks, if you use shake and vac that can make it worse in dogs, try brushing your dog on a daily basis and give it a bath at least once a month, some dogs just shed more than others, I have a golden retriever and as much as I brush and bath her she still sheds, some people tend to think if a dog sheds a lot they have either mange or fleas, that is a fallacy and I have an excellent vet who assured me its a fallacy, my dog has neither it is just her breed and the same for a lot of dogs, I just got used to it.

Brush them.

Seriously... that's part of being a dog owner.

Dogs in the wild would normally blow coat in the spring, and some in the fall, and otherwise keep most of their hair. However, an inside dog is in a temp-controlled environment, and therefore the shedding cycle is confused.

If you don't want a dog that sheds then I'd suggest a poodle or poodle-derived dog. A poodle does shed, but it's very light, and those hairs tend to become hair matts, which means you have to brush them every day (see a theme here?)

I realize all dogs shed constantly but my Lab was shedding excessively. Brushing on a regular basis helps keep the hair off you and your stuff but did not solve the problem. I tried coat supplements that did not help significantly. After reseaarch I learned the greatest cause of excessive shedding is a lack of nutrients. So I changed my dog food to Royal Canin's Labrador Retriever 30 which is specifically designed for the Labs and they have extra for their coats. Since then my dog's coat lokks great and his shedding has amazingly decreased. Try finding foods high with Omegs 3 and proteins. You can check out Royal Canin's website www.royalcanin.us it is extremely informational as far as nutrition.

Other than regular grooming, as long as its diet is ok there's not much you can do.

It may help to get a special dog brush or grooming mitt. These will make your dog grooming more effective. It depends on the breed of dog and how hairy it is as to what type you should go for. Ask at the pet shop for advice.

Other than that, grooming outside is helpful so that the hair doesn't go all over your furniture etc.

As an aside, my old dog used to shed A LOT. I groomed him outside and absolutely LOADS of hair would come out. We then watched the birds pick it up and use his hair to line their nests with. Quite sweet, I thought!

All dogs shed,
but there are a few things you can to to reduce the amount of fur that flies uncontrolably.

Make sure you are feeding them a healthy diet,
with little or no table food and plenty of water.
Make sure your dog goes to a groomer,
or that you bathe him/her every 6 weeks.
(Going to the groomer is great because they trim them and have special brushes that thins their fur and gets the lose fur from the undercoat, Try to atke your dog at least once in the heavy shedding season)

Giving your dog a good brushing once a week, there are brushes called a shedding blade that works extremely well.

Make a pillow?

Just kiddiing! This is the time of year dogs usually get a heavier coat. Is this usual for your dog at this time of year?

Sometimes shedding can be caused by other problems that are causeing the dogs body to be stressed. Perhaps you should check with your vet since sometimes this can be a symptom?

Brush the dog frequently, take the dog to the groomers and the first thing that I would do is take the dog to the vet to make sure it doesn't have mange. Good luck!!!!
