I had rough time getting my first credit card also. Citi sent me info in the mail for signing up with them so i tried and it worked. I had a limit of $700. this was after getting turned down by my own bank even.
they have also helped my credit tremendously since they report to all three credit agencies
good luck but don't abuse it once you get one. you will regret it if you do!!!!!!

I also have poor credit, and now have 4 credit cards (unsecured) meaning i didn't send them a "deposit" HOWEVER you will have to be charged annual fees and account opening fees... but if u do this with just one or two cards and use them wisely, in a year or so you can transfer those balances to a better card when your credit improves.
The best I have are from:

Good luck!

Orchard Bank.
They help rebuild your credit. Your initial limit will be low, but they raise it periodicly. Also, there is a fee which is charged to your card, I think it's an annual fee.
They report to the agencies regularly. The interest rate is on the high side.

Try a revolving account. They're the easiest to get: walmart card, jcpenny card, macys card, etc. The key is to note on the application that work & residence are at least 3 years established (they usually don't check this) & that income exceeds your bills by 2-3 times (they usually don't check this either). They want to make sure you can pay your current bills plus theirs.

There are no absolutes in getting a credit card but this was the first one I got. When you are nearing 30 and you have no credit, it's harder then when you have bad credit. Try this:

My credit rating sucks but I have two capital One cards. They APR is horrendous but it was the only answer for me.
I hope you don't just dig a deeper hole for yourself like I did.
Life in debt sucks.
Good luck :-)
