Yes -- dogs are pack animals (like the wolves they descended from), and are not happy unless they have companionship. I have a 10 month old puppy who lives with five older cats, and she treats them like her "pack". So far, she's roughly in the middle of the pecking order, but it was interesting to watch her establish her "position" while she was growing up.

Dogs are a lot like people, they all have their own different personalities. I have had a lot dogs throughout my life and some were extremely emotionally needy and others could careless. after my brother past away I took in his dog. The dog used to very happy and out going when my brother was alive. Now he is afraid of everything. If I raise my voice to my young Lab my brother's dog will go hide and shake in the corner. He has never been hit or abused but he lost all his security when he lost his master. If you do not acknowledge him he starts to shake and hides, or if he feels left out he stops eating. My Lab is just spoiled so if he is not the center of attention he gets destructive.

Yes, definitely. A dog is a "pack" animal by nature. It wants to be with it's pack all the time. In a family environment, that pack is the family. This is why a dog will often destroy things around the house when left alone. It is experiencing separation anxiety.

Absolutely. Dogs have deep emotions. If they have felt any hurt or abandonment in their lives, they may be especially "needy", meaning they crave the same reassurance that we do that they are noticed, loved, and safe. It is very kind of you to recognize this and to be so caring in your response to your pet. Good for you!

of course. a lot of dogs have problems with separation anxiety, if their owners leave they'll tear up the house and go crazy. dogs need love and kindness though, just like humans.
