That is a hard question to answer. I think it is all subjective. I would say after a few years of dealing with an abusive man, I would be justified in killing that man if he ever touched me again. I would kill someone threatening to harm my children. If my country was at war and I was serving in the armed forces, I would have to kill at some point in my line of duty.
I cannot justify killing a child, unless said child was a terrorists in training and had explosives attached to their body and was clinging to me or my children in an attempt to kill us.
I guess for me it sort of boils down to self defense or in the carrying out of orders given by my country. And even then I believe it is usually more of an issue with a whole lot of gray areas.

I was gonna quote from Talmud but my search found nothing positive. So I would say only when your life is at absolute danger and the provoker will kill you for sure unless you kill him.
If you must take a negative action it must be just.

there is a difference between murder and killing. murder is never acceptable in my personal belief system as it also goes against the laws rules and mores of the culture and society I reside in. killing which in defense of ones life and property when threatened by others, in the line of duty such as police and military, or in defense of another life to me would be perfectly acceptable.

I think killing someone is ok, provided it isn't murder. So if it's in self-defense, or to prevent them from killing someone else, or as a penalty for murdering someone, it's fine. Sometimes it's necessary.
