Ash Wednesday till Holy Thursday evening is Lent. The dates change each year because its tied to the Paschal/harvest moon. Next year, its 21 Feb till 5 April. (or at least that is for Roman Catholics)

It begins on ash wednesday.....for Catholics. It is approx. 40 days, echoing Moses' time in the desert and Jesus going out into the wilderness for forty days after his baptism in the Jordan. You may recall that there he was tempted by the devil. On Ash Wednesday, we as Catholics put ashes on our foreheads, with the words 'dust thou art and onto dust thou shalt return'. Through Lent we use it as a time of fasting and preparation for the death and resurection of jesus, through his death of Good Friday, and his resurection on easter Sunday. (The peiod known as ramadan has similiar connotations ie. fasting - for the Muslim faith.) That is why there was the tradition then on easter Sunday of celebration, as Jesus is alive and risen from the dead.

Lent is for Catholics. Christians do not celebrate Lent because it is not mentioned in the Bible.
