The rewarding of virtue and the punishment of vice, often in an especially appropriate or ironic manner.

A man steals a beautiful red shirt from a shop. He wears it to an outing with friends. It rains. The colour runs, staining his expensive trousers and his skin. (It was poetic justice).

A girl decides to cheat on her boyfriend. Her date takes her to a distant restaurant for a meal. On arrival, as they enter they are met by two people leaving arm in arm. It is her boyfriend who is also cheating. (It was poetic justice).
