The war on drugs was lost years ago.
As long as we consider drug usage only a legal problem & deal with it by putting people in jail & confiscating all their worldly possesions, the problem will never go away.
I have had several acquiantances that were caught up in the "drug war". Every time they were put in jail or prison, the further they were thrown into a world of crime. All the constraints that this "war on drugs" put on these people (ie unable to get a normal job, unable to get housing, forced further into poverty etc) caused them to go from casual drug with good jobs - usually marijuana users - to hardened criminals with little hope. No the drugs didn't do it - the lack of treatment of the root cause plus all the punitive punishment did.
The Libertarian Party is correct on their drug stance. Drugs should be legalized. I do believe the government should be pushing drug prevention & real drug treatment programs. Property confiscation laws should be taken off the books. They were originally passed to be used only for "drug kingpins" but now the government has the option to use them on the smallest user. INSANE & anti-American!
Before I get flamed I want to say that I do not use illegal drugs or legal drugs in an illegal manner.

There is no strategy because the war on drugs wont ever end. As long as you have people who buy the crap, its a no win situation.
I heard an idea once, if you are caught with drugs, they shot your butt and put up a sign " This is what we do to drug dealers" and leave you laying there for a day or two. Only trouble is, because of the money in drugs, some big names are behind it and wouldn't be surprised if some are holding public offices.
The only way to win the war on drugs is to get people off of the drugs.

The war on drugs is a joke.
All it is, is a way the government makes money and uses the military in some far off place for urban warfare practise.
If they really wanted to stop drugs then they would come up with a way of genetically altering the crops or killing them off.

Yes it is time for a change in policy.
askthepizzaguy - I tried to email you directly but Yahoo says your email is unconfirmed & they won't forward on email. How convenient.
Your answer is either acerbic tongue in cheek bombast or if you are serious completely frightening anti-American totalitarianism. Your solution is far worse than the problem. I will not allow you to ruin my country.
God bless America!

You Americans are crazy!
No free democracy has had a successful war on drugs. It is a social & medical problem not a matter of war.
Why aren't you helping your fellow citizen & not demonize & imprison him?

No you just need a General Patton. I will be such a person.
First, I would militarize the border with Mexico, and triple the number of people inspecting our ports, and deport all drug traffickers to a Siberian concentration camp, where they will do nothing but manufacture bullets which will be used by policemen and FBI agents to kill every single last mafia member, drug kingpin, and two-bit dealer on the streets of every city.
Second, I would arrest anyone found in possession of drugs or found impaired by drugs and round them up and put them in a detox facility until they dry out. And if they have a second offense I will ship them off to a penal colony somewhere in Alaska where they will drill oil to pay for their rehab the first time, and learn the value of hard labor.
Third, I would simply execute anyone who was a rapist or a murderer under the influence of illicit drugs, if it can be proven in a court of law to a jury of peers that they were drug users.
Fourth, I would mandate a minimum 1 year in a work camp for anyone who has a first offense for even the most minor drug related infraction, including driving drunk.
Then, I would deport anyone here illegally to their countries of origin, and send their children with them. Then, I would remove welfare for the able bodied, and detox or send to a mental facility or work camp any worthless vagrant bum on the streets.
Then, I would put a message detailing all of this in every newspaper, radio broadcast, tv broadcast, major website, and on at least one major billboard in every major city. I would drop fliers containing the message written in every major language onto the worst drug infested slums in America. I would offer a penalty-free period of three days for anyone wishing to surrender and get rehab.
Then I would sent in swat teams and reserve soldiers armed to the teeth looking for contraband in any building which has had a history of drugs and, with a warrant, search any building suspected of being related to organized crime or the drug trade.
I would shoot on sight anyone who did not immediately surrender and cooperate with the authorites.
Finally, any child in any public school would have to agree to targeted searches for illegal substances. Anyone found with any drugs after the first offense will be expelled.

I wouldn't say exit, I would say find a backdoor that leads to catching the major profiteers.
