They do that when they are content. It is a natural reaction they learn from when they feed on their mom. THe kneeding motion helps the milk flow from the teet.

My cat did the same thing and I found out it was NOT happy feet at all.... Actually there is a strong possibility that your cat really needs to go to the vet very soon.... I found out when cats do that they have parasites between their claws. Your cat probably picked it up from a dirty litter box because of digging in it to cover it's feces.... Your cat maybe uncomfortable and there is medication for it.... I would get the medication and then get a different litter box and keep it extra clean all the time.. You really don't want that spreading to you or on your blankets, etc

They are sharpening thier claws most of the time, it's like giving them a scratching post.

When cats are babies, they do this to moms to help her milk "let down". (called kneeding...at our house, we call it "making bread") So, when a cat does this to you, consider it a major act off affection and know that they feel very comfortable and loved in your care.
You may want to keep kitty's nails trimmed so it doesnt "owwie" when he or she does this. Im adding a link on how to do this safely.

Isn't it adorable? If you've seen kittens suckling, that's what they do to their mom (poor mama!!!) to keep the milk flow coming. I guess that they just keep doing it because it's instinctive.
