They are very expensive to get a true Coton de Tulear. What does the term champions in the bloodline really mean when purchasing a dog and is that important to me? I only want a healthy family pet not a show dog or anything. So should I go with a non-champion Coton. Are they cheaper?

most of the time if they say champions in a blood line that tells you the dog may be show quality, it also means that the bloodline is generaly healthy compaired to others. If you talk to the person and say that you only want it as a pet and sign a contract saying you will spay or nuter it, they will normaly give it to you cheaper.

How about not getting a pet for Christmas? It's honestly one of the WORST times of year to get a pet:
-so many people come around, it could scare/confuse the puppy
-christmas decorations (lights, baubles, the tree, tinsel, etc.) could get eaten/destroyed, and hurt the dog
- there will be other toys around that you child will want to play with, even though the dog is there, and the dog could feel neglected
- all of the food around because of the festivities (mainly chocolate and candies) could be laying around the house, ready to be eaten, and could leave the puppy very sick

there are sooooo many other reasons NOT to introduce a pet into your household at Christmas time.
What I would reccommend doing is, as Christmas presents, getting all of the supplies you need (leash, food, bowls, bed, toys, etc.) and leave those under the tree. You can also leave a stuffed animal dog, with a little note that says "coming soon!" or something like that. Then you and your child will have more time to talk/think about getting a dog, and it will still be a surprise. Your child seems of school age to me, so he probably has February break for president's week. What could be a better time to get a puppy than then? Your child will be home, and able to get to know the puppy, the puppy will be able to adjust in calmer surroundings, and the best part is that you could go with your son to choose the puppy, so that you know that he won't be disappointed by your choice.

I know that this hasn't answered your question, but it's the better thing to do. Also, you child might not want a Coton de Tulear puppy. If you go with him to choose one, you'll find a perfect match!

The skull is slightly rounded and wider than it is long. The muzzle is straight and shorter than the skull. The nose is black in colour, brown tolerated but not preferable, pink unacceptable.

The above is an excerpt from Wikipedia, about this breed of dogs.

Since a pink nose is unacceptable in the breed, I think if you look for a pup with a pink nose (or even light brown) they should be GLAD to get some revenue for it. Remember, a breeder often doesn't want any other breeder to know that their champion b*tch threw any pups that weren't perfect (because imperfections can persist in her daughters and sons). So if you promise to never tell where you got the pup their inherant greed should prevail.

I do not know where you are located at but the is a rescue in Texas http://www.cotonrescue.us/

Before you try a breeder, try a site called http://www.petfinder.org there are alot of dogs this site. Most of them are sitting in shelters that euthanize. Other sites that are good in locating animals are

http://www.pet-ark.com
http://www.pets911.com

If in the event you would like to visit us just to look around, we can be found at

Sigh...you ever heard,"You get what you PAY for."???

NO reputable breeder makes PETS on purpose!!! They come along in EVERY litter,EVERY breed!!!

So...if you find somebody who's doing it "on the CHEAP"...RUN AWAY!!!!They are CROOKS making ***CRAP*** & peddling to the ignorant/gullible!!!

Then you come down to ...****WHY*** do you *think* you want such an expensive *&* HIGH MAINTAINENCE dog for a little boy??? *HE* sure doesn't care.
