dogs bark to communicate with each other just like we talk. if your dog is constantly barking he might be:
barking at another dog
barking at a squirrel or a rabbit
barking at someone
or trying to tell you something to protect you

It's thir way of talking, I suppose. Also, letting creatures know that they are there.
