This tradition began in the Middle Ages in Europe where black was culturally associated with death (white is the color of mourning in Asia). Because Europe was filled with superstition, especially after the Plague, people associated illness with supernatural causes. In their fear, they would often blame old women for the problem. These became the scapegoats they called "witches". Often these women were, in fact, the only "doctors" around who used herbal remedies much as we do today. But if the cure didn't work or if plague came, then they were easy targets. Part of this superstition involved the belief that these "witches" used animal spirits as their "familiars" to channel demons from hell or even Satan himself. Because cats appear more intelligent and aloof, they became the natural household pet to blame (after all, who is going to believe a Bloodhound is channeling the devil? lol). Black (death) cats became the obvious symbol and that image has stuck in Western culture ever since.

In ancient Egypt, the Goddess Bast, was a black female cat. Christian priests wanted to wipe out all traces of other religions so convinced their ignorant followers to destroy the evil demons that were black cats. While they were at it, they destroyed the kindly little old ladies who cared for the cats believing them to be witches.
