To realize is to find your knowledge then and there, it suddenly strikes you. If you know you have known it for a while or at least since you realized it.

Sometimes there isn't much. For example; I didn't know you were a vegetarian and I didn't realize you were a vegetarian could both be used in the same situation and have more or less the same meaning.
To realize does imply 'to suddenly be aware of something' whereas to know could be about knowledge over a longer time.

realize, is after study "I now realize the moon looks like a light because of the suns reflection on it"
Know is just that "I know the moon looks like a light"

Realize usually means gaining insight, wisdom and vision out of knowledge.

To realize is "to grasp or understand clearly." To know is "to perceive or understand as fact or truth; to apprehend clearly and with certainty."

Most people could use these words in the same sentence and it would have the same meaning. I realize its raining outside and I know its raining outside would prove the same thing.
