Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Harry Potter, etc. are all orphans. Why is this a common theme.

My 6 year old son gets very upset over this. I was reading him a comic book (Crisis on Infinite Earths) and a storyline mimics Superman's being put in a rocket and sent away while his parents die and my son just started balling. Same with Harry Potter yesterday.

Hi,

It's good to see that parents have not lost the fine art of reading to their children. it's very important.

That is true what you said about so many main characters not having parents. (Don't forget Oliver Twist, Tom Sawyer, Huck Finn, & Bambi too)

I think it's so the author does not have to go into character developement for the parents. Also, it gives the character nobody to turn to for direction, thus leaving more possibilities for adventures in the story to occur. The audience is more sympathetic towards an orphaned character.

Try providing a balance of different types of stories for your son. There are other good adventures out there of kids who do have parents. Good luck & keep reading :)

P.S. I just found this website that offers further explanations on that topic. It maintains that it's because it emphasizes that childhood is difficult, and that despite obstacles, you can succeed. It also mentions a few other theories. You should check it out.

Without their parents dying, they wouldn't fight evil.
