I was told the tires would be safe because they are steel belted and they hold air and have good tread. I have drove on them for a month now and no problem. I just saw the cracks in the spaces between the tread, and now I am worried. Understand the cracks are the spaces where you can put a penny between the tread to check to see how much tread you have. I suspect these are old tires and may have dry rot I do not know. I did not notice this when I first bought them. Is it true the cracks I should not worry about as long as the tires hold air? Also is it true the steel belts are what is holding the tires together?

As long as the steel cords aren't showing it should be OK.

The thing to check is the manufacture date. I don't know how to read it...

Go to a tire shop, they can help you decode the date. You shouldn't use tires that are more than 6 or 8 years old due to "dry-rot."

Good luck.
