He inadvertently left a message on my answer machine, he must have forgot to turn his mobile off, calling me a lazy b****h and said that answering the f*****g phone was too much trouble for me. My husband called him and his dad said that it was just an off the cuff remark.

Thanks you lot! You have cheered me up no end. Gonna have trouble picking a best answer out of them, they were all excellent, most of them hillarious, cheers.

Father in law needs to watch his mouth. An off the cuff remark my butt. The older generation seem to think they can get away with saying the things they do because they are older, but no matter what age you are, it is not ok to talk about someone like that. It shows a distinct amount of disrespect. It seems these days that daughters in law are less and less respected by their parents in law. He needs to apologise to you and work on his communication skills. Your husband needs to speak up some more and get his dad to apologise to you instead of making some dumb excuse for ill manners. Hope this helps u hun. If all else fails be honey sweet to him, he will end up feeling so bad the apology might just come on it's own if he has a conscience.

Well my father in law recently turned me and hubby into Child Protecion Services alleging we abused our son because we wouldn't send our son to a tutor every weekend that was three hours away from our home. So CPS came to our home and did an investigation and all allegations were "100% unfounded" and "made out of spite".
So I know how you feel about thinking that your in-laws are the spawn of satan.

Visit him and tell him gently that you know what he thinks of you. Tell him exactly that you did not like it for him to call you names and will not appreciate it should he continue then tell him that you would love to have a good relationship with him but if he does not need it it's okay with you. Make sure you let him know that you heard what he left on the answer machine.
Hope he gets you straight.

He got caught out good and proper....do what I did with my father in law...tell him exactly what you think of him too....how dare he leave an abusive message to you and then think he can just make pathetic excuses which don't wash...what a moron...you need to ask him how he would feel/react if you had done the same thing to him...sure he would not have been able to accept his lame excuse if you used it!

Take a dump in a box, gift wrap it, and send it to him.
Write on the card, the following:
Dear Dad in Law,
I would have gotten you something nicer, but because I am so lazy, this sh*t was all I could get. Enjoy!

As you have to live with him being your father in law, not much you can do about it unless you want to start a big family row. If it was me, I would avoid him as much as possible and when I had to see him, would be very cool. Thing is, Im a gobby b****h and probably wouldn't be able to let it lie so good luck.

I would make your husband tell him to apologise to you if he hasn't already. As he is your father-in-law you will have to accept the apology gracefully. If I were you I would be overly nice to him in front of your husband to show you have no bad feelings. Then at Christmas or Birthdays buy his gift from the pound shop!!!

I would put a nasty remark on my cuffs for him to read. Hehehe just kidding (fantasizing helps though.) I'd ignore it, but would certainly lose trust in him.

exactly and it's this type of off the cuff remark that just shows his lack of respect for you. Be civil to him but never go out of your way for him.

To err is human to forgive Divine. Sounds like he needs forgiveness.
My mother gets nasty on the answering service too, I think she is upset because she is losing it and has to tell people things when she thinks of them, or she forgets, then when the service picks up, she gets flustered by it and forgets.
