I have never FTP before and I thought it was meant to be fast. It seems my 1GB file will take all day. Does this make sense?

FTP is just a protocol. Various factors determine the speed of your download like network congestion, site traffic and so on.

I just did a download and it downloaded at 80Kb per second so 4.8meg per minute. 288 Mb an hour - so 1 gig should take less than 4 hours. But my ADSL tends to be slow on weekends. I also chose a server that tends to be slow! So the max should be 4 hours - but on a good day I'd do it in half that. When I say 80 Kb a second I mean kilobytes not kilobits! My actual speed is probably around 640 Kbs - but the server could be slowing me down. I get 2 Mbs on a good day with the wind in the right direction! lol

Hi friend,
Try to use a download manager to download from the FTP server. Normally FTP protocol download takes so...... much time. I normally use Falshget to download from FTP also. Try it out if you want. http://www.flashget.com

depends on

1) the speed of the server you are connecting to
2) if you are downloading anything else at the same time
3) speed of your connection
4) internet traffic
5) your settings for downloading FTP
