Why is Saudi Arabia a strict country? I know that they follow according to the Shari'ah law by Prophet Muhammad ,SalAlahu Alayhi Wasalam, (peace be upon him). But I don't think they might it in a right way, No equal rights for women, women cannot drive, no movie theaters, lots of Muttawahs, women cannot work publicly (at least wearing her abayah will do). I'm not against Saudi Arabia, but at least there should be some adjustments. I just leave this matter to Allah subhana wa talaa. As Salamalykum (May the peace be with you)

They are Wahabi Muslims, a puritanical, fundamentalist sect of Islam. Their beliefs and practices regarding women derive from a literal interpretation of passages in the Koran and the Hadith.
"[a] Muslim puritan movement founded by Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Wahhab in the 18th century in Najd, central Arabia, and adopted in 1744 by the Sa'udi family.
....Wahhabi call themselves al-Muwahhidun, “Unitarians,” a name derived from their emphasis on the absolute oneness of God (tawhid). They deny all acts implying polytheism, such as visiting tombs and venerating saints, and advocate a return to the original teachings of Islam as incorporated in the Qur'an and Hadith (traditions of Muhammad), with condemnation of all innovations"

I think it would be a good thing if Saudi Arabia would become a really democratic country. But then, aren't there a few things that ought to be changed in a lot of other countries? For inspiration you might read the latest book by Bob Woodward.

Ibn Saud was given armoured cars and machine guns by the British to establish his kingdom in return for oilwells. He has no intersest in democracy and as long as the oil flows nobody else does either, not even the USA exporters of democracy by fire and sword. If the Saudi Royals shut off the oil they would be deposed and the oil would be turned back on by their replacements, or the country would be occupied. If the oil ever runs out USA will leave and the Arabians can go back to licking dates for a living. The Royals would need to fend for themselves.
