How did they come by the notion that there was a God at all if not by some information gleaned from religious dogma...I don't understand it at all... can anyone explain?

It's usually people who have a fully Christian notion of who & what god is but they think they have sidestepped the religion, the creative self-delusion of some theists stuns me at times.

I wish I could explain, but, alas, I can only say that it confuses me, as well.

If they are saying that they understand that there must be a higher power than themselves, then I'd understand that since if you look around nature or up in the sky, it is apparent that there was a Creator.

But I'm always astounded by people who essentially proclaim a Christian faith but feel they can do it on their own. The very basic tenets of Christianity involve believing on Christ and following His teachings which involve fellowship and involvement in a local church.

Religious dogma is the product of man. Why would anyone need it then to experience God? God didn't write books or come up with the warped concepts of morality that comprise the major religions of the world. Really, religion has nothing to do with God. Religion is more about keeping the masses in line and generating revenue for the heads of said religions. I mean, how many times does a person truly experience God in the strictly regimented course of a Sunday morning service?

"Dogma" refers to a religious teaching formulated by a religious institution. I think the word you want is "revelation".

In any case, why do we have the notions of dragons, unicorns and trolls? A lot of people know all about them, even though they don't exist.

Dogma purports to reveal supernatural information which we would not be able to verify by observation or experiment. Doesn't THAT sound a little suspicious? I would think that if we could know anything about God at all, we could know enough to get by without the help of "dogma".

Sympathy is what I feel that since in my opinion they have this huge spiritual blockage and only rely upon what can be scientifically proven. And they can get pretty mean about the whole issue. Okay, if you're so okay with it, why are you snapping on me? WAIT, you're NOT talking about atheists. I just re-read the question. You're talking about non-religious people who DO HAVE FAITH. Okay, got it now. Sorry. Okay... so yes, it is kinda like not needed lemons to drink lemonade. They don't appreciate from which the juice comes, but they now have the "flavor" and satisfaction of drinking the tasty beverage. Okay, I need coffee now, I just hurt my wee little brain a bit. Yeah, people are twisted. It's easy to say you just have a relationship with God, but you're right. That comes AFTER your faith, which comes by hearing and hearing BY THE WORD (bible, church, pastor=Dogma) of God.

Consider the example of Descartes and the reasoning that followed from his famous "I am, I exist." He claims to have thrown out all of his prior assumptions and reason his way through a proof of the existence of God. Along the way he decides several things just have to be true and accepts them without proof, and from them derives the necessity of the existence of a supreme being, God. If you take out one of his postulates, the whole thing collapses.

Anyone who says that they can know God, or an infinite consciousness, or anything else, without having the concept first introduced to them by others, is fooling themselves.

Maybe you're right. I am not a person that makes that claim so I can't explain it to you. It seems to me if there was a God that wanted us to know it, it would have a way of making itself apparent, like in our hearts and minds. It would not need man to intercede. Probably those people just did not like their religion. I am different, I don't believe in God but I liked my religion so what do you do with that?

Who invented the first religion and concept of Gods?

Ancient civilizations that predate Hebrews by thousands of years had Gods & religion, so it is obvious people can invent Gods without religion and vice versa.

Jesus was actually against organized religion in a way.

He was against some traditions, rules, regulations, lengthy prayers etc...

Mankind guided by the devil has created so many religions to make it hard for you to find your faith.

Believe in Christ and read his word (bible)

Forget all the stupid rules men put in place to control other men
