I dont know for definate but as I child I was always told to stay away and not pick/touch the ferns in the forrest (near where I lived) as I would get Cancer.
So I think somebody, somewhere must have thought that the was.
Whether it is true or not I dont know

Yes you should stay clear of ferns (bracken not all ferns) during sporing season or wear a mask. Not proven in humans but best to be cautious.

My friend told me that the other day...that ferns were carcinergenic...wonder if its cos they have spores on the leaves or what
