The belief that Jesus did not die (physically) on the cross is pure blasphemy to a Christian. (Which is why I, personally, am quite offended when a Muslim tries to say that they hold Christ in higher esteem than Christians).
If you study the Old Testament, you will see that the sacrifice for sin was always without blemish. That was the only way to atone for sin. If your sacrifice were injured or "damaged" before the sacrifice, it was no longer acceptable to God.
Jesus was without blemish. Perfect. The final sacrifice to forgive our sins forever. To "switch" him with a criminal would be to mar the sacrifice and the whole thing would be pointless.

Yes he died on the cross. He was a well known figure, so everyone would have known if he had been replaced by an impostor. The jewish leaders were there to gloat over his death. They made sure that this false prophet had died, therefore they thought destroying his claims, to messiahship, and divinity. There were hundreds of witnesses that saw Jesus hang, and die on the cross. He was executed on a hill, next to a busy road of the time. The romans knew how to kill someone through crucifixion. You did not just get off and walk away. Jesus was pierced in the side by a spear, this brought forth water and blood, a clear sign of death. His heart had exploded. This is a medical fact. Josephus, a jewish historian, who was not a christian, spoke of his death, so did many other sources. Three days later, he rose from the dead, and was seen for a period of forty days by his disciples. 11 out of the 12 apostles were mistreated there whole lives and then died horribly for the there faith in Jesus' life, death, and resurection. They truly believed in Jesus. Matthew, Mark, luke and John were eye witnesses of his glory. He also fulfilled all the old testament prophecies, concerning the messiah. He fulfilled about 300 on the day of his death alone. Do you know the mathmatical odds for that? This points to him being fully God, and fully man.

Christians believed Christ died on the cross; and arose three days later as fully part of the Godhead(the Trinity). Islam came along 600 years later, had not witnesses to the crucifixion and deinitely had some different ideas about many things. I don't think trusting a Muslim's definition of Christianity is actually worth much that what is left in a chamber pot after a particularly bad night.

Dying on the Cross of an exalted person defies logic, hence there are other explanations, some believed to be 'inspired', holy, and sacred information. The life of the great exalted person, Jesus the Christ, is full of mystery; from his coming and then going out of this world. The Muslim belief is also shrouded in mystery, because the meanings of the Quranic information have been taken differently by differing scholars. If the Asker is a serious and sober student of this 'mystery' then there is wealth of information in Muslim sources; not possible to be summarised in this forum. The Muslim Mystics get the equivalent of their 'doctorate' when they have 'seen' the reality behind the apparent mystery. They shall not speak, but they would lead you to obtain your own 'doctorate'. They claim that the Muslims are far ahead of their Christian brothers in the reverence and love for mylord Jesus the Christ ! On saying so, they deserve the respect from Christians.. which is showered by Christian mystics not by Christian priests... who hold on to their dogma.

Jesus came into this world in order to give his life to redeem mankind from sin.
The live of Jesus proves HE did not come in to live a lie.
It does not matter a fig to Christians what muslims believe, as it is understood they live their lives in 'error'.
Remember that islam is only the latest of these religions, arriving 600 years after the birth of Christ.
The manner of the death of Jesus is accepted as a tenet of faith and a basic Christian truth.
You have received many answers to this question, most informing you of these peoples' beliefs.
Why would the early apostles go willingly to their deaths in defense of a lie?

What Muslims or any one else believes do not count if the beliefs do not match up with the Bible, which is God's inspired Word.
Yes, Mary and the disciples were there when Jesus was crucified.

He died on a branchless tree or pole, as was the common method of execution in Israel. The Romans didn't even use the cross as a regular form of execution until 78 C.E.
In Israel, if you hadn't died by night fall, they broke your legs. The reason for this is that when hanging with your hands tied or nailed above your head, your lungs are squeezed and you suffocate. To prevent this, men would hold themselves up using their legs, thus the need to break them.

No, he died on an execution stake or tree. See Acts 5:30 and Galatians 3:13. Stake comes from the Greek word "stauros" and tree is from the Gree "xylon".

The Muslims also believe that there is a rock in Jerusalem that bears the hoof-print of Mohammed's horse.
Jesus did relinquish his earth life on the cross. He did it partly in order to demonstrate his death publicly so that His resurrection would be unambiguous.

I have heard that Muslims believe Christ only swooned on the cross and revived later. Being a Christian I disagree!
Maybe you should ask Muslims only. It doe s not make you a jerk to be curious! I know a nun who has read the Koran and works with Muslims. They are Gods children too!
I also have to say most Christians have never read the Koran and have no idea what it says because we are taught that all prophets after Jesus are false prophets sent to deceive us.
