I have been in this section for a while and I have never seen more hate and vile filth spewed out by any other group of people, ever! People who claim to be good christians become monsters as soon as you question or challenge anything that they say or believe. Why is this? People who should be helping the less fortunate and showing compassion and charity literally spit on those that they consider beneath them like immigrants and people of other faiths. If you claim to follow the word of god why do you hate instead of love? Why are you so intolerant of others?

My guess is fundamentalism. Christian fundamentalism started in the US in the 19th century and have had plenty of time to root itself in the mind of many Americans. Now they are in politics and of course politics spans into many areas and reaches many persons. Fundamentalism is intolerance, it's one way or no way.

Edit to add;
When you believe in something that can't be proved by toady's standards you have to be deep in denial, and if you are in denial you will attack anything that threatens what you believe in to save the world image that you have. It's like watching magic and accepting it for what the magician presents it like without wondering how he did it. Sometimes we want to be fooled.

And I agree, it's not all Americans, but those that are that way are the ones that stand out.

American Christians are not necessarily the most ignorant . They are either humble or simply do not know every thing. If you ever met a person(s) who claims to be a Christian and not humble, he is not a Christian. But if he is a Chritian and offended you, he made a mistake(we all make mistakes) for some reason such as he was in a very hurry, or whatever. And if he sinned against you, he would and should have apologided to you and he himself wll repent again to get it right with God .READ Bible.

I'd have to say it's just ignorance. I've experienced this not only in the general public but in many of my family members who follow the Christian faith as well. Thus giving me more incentive to experience with other religions. However, I agree strongly with the first answer for this question. Unfortunately some Christians are this way, but that's unfortunate for them.

It's a cultural thing. I live in the UK and I know a lot of Christians with pretty conservative views but even they cringe with embarassment at the behaviour of their American counterparts. For some reason US fundamentalists seem to revel in being crass and intolerant. They give me the impression that most of them are brainwashed.

Because the GOOD American Christians are too busy feeding the hungry, housing the needy, advocating for the poor and disenfranchised and trying to promote peace to post here.

Americans rarely do anything by halves. When we go for something we really go for it.

The christians on here represent the small, most vocal, and most hateful minority of christians in the country.

Their numbers are growing however, mainly do to the fact that moderate and liberal interpretaions of scripture have been under attack. Those moderate and liberal religious leaders have rolled over and died too. They need to stop turning the other cheek and start reclaiming America's religious landscape!

Try being a Russian or Greek orthodox. They out do Americans any day of the week. Then there is the Christians in the Balkans, who don't even have a word for homosexual. Then there's South Africa, before things changes, but likely just as much.

Historically, Americans came from a puritanical sect of an ultra-orthodox, fundamentalist strand of Protestantism.

Americans, in general, have an underlying sense of repressed shame in relation to experiencing happiness, pleasure, success and the expression of sexuality is tainted as being immorally evil (Janet Jackson's 'Nipplegate scandal" is a case in point).

Being an insular, xenophobic society has served America well. It suits them. they have in innate sense of instant entitlement, and this arrogance is a symptom of their compulsion to invade other countries and dictate to the other countries in the world.
