Now THAT's an interesting question. I've heard that a few people have synesthesia, which allows them to feel colors, or hear shapes, or see sounds.... I've also heard people claim that they can see auras (like halos) extending past the outline of others' bodies. Maybe there are people who can actually smell a person's spirit.
I did (surprise! surprise!) have a Bible verse come to mind when I read your question. The sense of smell is being used metaphorically here, I would think, for most people...but I too would be interested in knowing if some were actually left with a physical impression in their noses. I know I'm not.
"Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life." II Corinthians

(I just finished reading it---article also contains interesting discussion on the meaning of suffering. Thanks Sara, I wouldn't have seen this if you hadn't asked the question.)

Smell a spirit? hmmmmmmm
I would just stick with a quick sniff. I wouldn't take my fingers and poke around for the smell. It may not be a "spirit" that one would ....like......hmmmmm
enjoy...
