This question usually results in the most convoluted answers imaginable.

If the God of the Bible existed, he would be the most malevolent force imaginable. There is no other logical conclusion based on all the suffering endured not only by humans, but by plants & other animals as well.

But, the Bible is a book of mythology that is based on earlier legends and myths that included demonic heroes or "Gods."

God is not cruel at all. He is perfect in Justice. (Deuteronomy 32:4) He is "righteous in all his ways". (Psalm 145:17) He never acts wickedly (Job 34:10,12)and he can read hearts. (1 John 3:20)

In the past, as recorded in the Bible, He has called down destruction on certain ones, because he is able to read people's hearts. It is not a cruel thing to destroy wicked people who have no love for others, for God, and for what is good and right. It is in fact a loving thing for God to destroy wicked ones, so that the righteous, good people can be happy. It would be absurd even to imagine that humans could be more just and righteous than God! (Romans 3:4,5; 9:14)

The time will come when this whole world will be cleansed of wickedness and only the righteous ones will live on earth in peace and happiness. (Psalm 37:9-11, 29) If the wicked are not destroyed, this could never happen, the world would continue as it is, in the big mess it's in. Wicked ones have to be destroyed and God will do it, so that what is righteous and just will occur.

Satan however is opposite of God. While God is righteous in all His ways, the Devil is wicked. All of Satan's ways are wicked.

Is unicorn steak tastier than Dragon-tail-pie?

But let's view god as a character in a novel, and answer the question hypothetically. Certainly you recognize that they work hand in hand. Satan is an agent of god, sent to test the flock so that god can gleefully send more of them to Hell.

Yeah, god is a real prince, but the only really nice thing I can say about Satan is that he's not as scary as god, not by half.

PS, I love it when people respond to questions like this with dogma and verse. As if quoting passages from the bible to the effect of "god is good, god is great" is any kind of proof or furthers any sort of argument. Obviously those people havn't thought for themselves a day in their lives.

I'd say God is worse if it's true that the popes and many others have been operating by the word of God.
