Once apon a time ago there was a use for docked tails, but if you are PET owner your dogs tail dose not need dockin, i have 2 jackrussells with there tails, and do you know what, i love to see them wag their tails not stumps, if you have workin dogs that could make a diff, tails get caught in traps, fencin, and so on, but if like me you have them to love and cuddle, leave um with the tails, and let them wag away lol lol
ODD DOG i agree with you about ear croppin GRrrrrrr nasty thing to do to your dog, why would somone hurt their dog for no reason???? the mind boggels

If you plan to work a dog for hunting, such as spaniels and pointers, it is advisable to have the tail docked, this is for heath reasons as a flushing or retrieving dog can damage and potentially break their tails when entering heavy cover, also while the dog is working it will be exited and therefore wagging it's tail often vigorously, thus heightening the danger. However, if you own a show dog there is no reason for the tail to be docked as this dog will never work in a hunting environment.
Tail docking is basically prevention rather than cure, because a dog with a broken tail will probably have to have it amputated anyway.

Better a cropped tail than a bloody painful broken tail that has to be removed as an adult. They tend to get broken in the field, and sometimes just in the house.

This is just plain not true. There are people who show AND field trial.

The springer spaniel is traditionally bred for working, a gun dog. As a lot of the work entails running through long grass, over hedges, in and out of bushes etc the tails were docked to avoid injury to them...its nice to see the dogs that are used as PETS with their waggy tails tho. Oh and to GitEm Gang...I have seen it done, if it is not done for working purposes there is NO reason to have it done and they do SQUEAL when the tail is docked!

Springers as a breed traditionally had there tails docked, goes hand in hand with the fact that they are bred to work out doors as gun dogs.

I think GitEmGang needs to go see a psychiatrist, he needs help!!
Springers have always had their tails docked, I think that if they are working dogs and not pets then may be it is a good idea as I have seen what can happen to tails that get caught in gorse bushes and bramble bushes, but if they are just pets then there is no need to dock any dogs tails, and as for cropping ears well............??!!!

Tail docking in spaniels is common because they are used as gun dogs, but spaniels can have problems with infections in their tails so some people have them docked for medical reasons, some for vanity some for working.
Whatever the reason though it is not necessary and I don't agree with it.

It is not completely cosmetic, they have long whippy tails they wag with such exurberence that they can actually make themselves bleed.
I think the rest of it's traditional, and cosmetic. ;-)

Again...for the gazillionth time...Tails are DOCKED,ears are CROPPED!
And...for the 83 gazillionth time...it's NOT "cruel"!!!
IF any of the crybaby,AR/humaniac/peta-NUTZ had ever actually DONE a dock or even SEEN the procedure, they *might* have a molocule of credence. BUT no....they merely "parrot the LIES" they've been fed.
