scoliosis and heavyweights...well I am sure that it could happen but I do Not recommend doing so....I mean depending on how bad the scoliosis is depends on if a person could lift weights at all...but if you choose to lift the heavyweights just make sure your spine is really supported, definitely going to have to lay down and lift them in the form of a bench press because sitting up could do damage to the torso and lumbar spine areas and standing well...its just not a smart thing to do. I have scoliosis ..I was diagnosed as a young child..Even though they can fix your scoliosis it still is something that you will have even if its very slight...there are other things you can do to stay in shape that will not aggravate your scoliosis..such as, if you want to strengthen your biceps doing more repetitions with a lighter weight is better than doing less with a heavier one because its less strain on your body.,

Firstly: lifting weights in a gymnasium should not affect your spine too much, so long as it is the sort where you are lying down, and you are doing it properly so that no pressure is put on your spine.

Lifting any sort of heavy weights whilst your back is not supported (eg not lying down) when you have scoliosis is not a good idea.

If you have ever had any form of corrective surgery (eg Harrington Rods or spinal fusion -- I had the latter nearly 10 months ago) lifting heavy weights is to be avoided at all costs while standing, as it could affect the instrumentation in your back.

If your scoliosis has so far been untreated, it all depends on how severe your scoliosis is. If it is a relatively minor curve (and I say this respectfully, as I know that even a small curve can have its effects) then it may not have much more of an effect on you than someone WITH scoliosis, as long as you lift using the proper technique. f it is more severe (eg over 40 degrees on the Cobb measurement scale -- ask your consultant who will have worked it out from your x-rays) then you should be taking good care of your spine ALL the time, trying to reduce strain on it.

I personally would not recommend lifting heavy objects if you have scoliosis. Your muscles are a bit more susceptible to pain, especially if you lift using the wrong technique.

Yes. I once saw a weightlifter lifting a huge barbell while they did a flouroscopy of his spine. It looked like a snake. I have scoliosis and lifted big televisions with no problem. Just have to do some exercises to keep everything in order. Here's more on that:

Not a good idea to lift heavy weights in a standing position, no.

Bench presses are okay, but when your spine is already curved sideways, heavy weights will only aggravate your condition.

Try traction and yoga for straightening your lordosis as much as you can, to it's normal curved shape.

Why has the scoliosis not been corrected? It took a while to get there, it will take a while to reverse it.. if getting the proper treatment.

No, they really shouldn't do that. The pressure of the weights could injure the disks.
