Many sociologists would argue that Religions is functional for society and that yes it is a human invention. I believe this would be Durkheims opinion or religion. One sociologist (not positive whether it was Marx or Weber) described religion in his study as the 'opium of the people'

No. Religion is a human invention created to control the vulnerable and weak. It hasn't got anything to do with morals. The church isn't well known for being able to promote moral values, when itself doesn't follow what it preaches.
Society is able to live without religion and still have good morals, as long as it is promoted by family, friends, peers, etc.

If that is the case....why are so many religious leader, imams, priests etc totally unbalanced and totally immoral!! You do not need religion for a balanced society. Just fair laws and education!
More wars have been started over religious beliefs, and more chaos caused by religious beliefs - 9/11 for eg!

Nope. Religion was invented to explain the unexplainable. Why does the wind blow? Why does it rain? Why is there day and night? Why are there seasons? Where did we come from? What happens after we die? Later on, the stories and traditions of the people became bound up in the religion, and became an integral part of their cultural identity.
As civilization developed, religion "grew up" too. Shamans became priests and their mythical folklore became an institution. This institution, then as now, is primarily concerned with upholding TRADITION.
Morality, if you like, is merely one part of this tradition.

Religion is a human invention meant to keep society as a whole docile and complacent. It also serves as an excuse to exploit and annihilate any group that doesn't believe in the same doctrine, or more likely, that has some resource that the powers that be want to control.

Man was not created by God.
Gods were created by men - that's why there are so many religions.
It's a deep seated need that is met by creating something supernatural to believe in. A force to guide us and a source of comfort.

religions are not only used to create morality in the society. it 's also being used to lend support to our immoral activities, by revoking religious sanctions.
a man can be good with or without religions.
i think religion is the result of our instincts. instinct to form a group, because man need to be a social animal. to form a group, u need to follow one leader. we have instinct to respect, rever a leader among us. we extrapolate this instinct to imagine, a being as leader of the whole world- the god.

If that was so it has never worked.
The bible explains all aspects of the world from its beginning to its end. Not one word has ever changed despite what some may say.
People making up rules and regulations is a religion.
Just have faith and read the word of God.
