I think that's a great idea! I think the best gifts for older people are hand-made crafts or something that has to do with family. Buying something in the store isn't as special or personal and it's better to give something that you put time and effort into and it can be cheaper.

If she likes the garden like my dad did, he had a bird feeder that he kept full, and a hummingbird feeder as well. He had a chair sitting near them so he could enjoy them up close. He kept things like that, right up until his death. Get her something that shows you have paid attention to her tasks in the yard, appreciate her work, and want to enhance it a little. My dad was all out of ideas for my siblings and myself when it came to birthdays, holidays, etc. He had more shirts than he could possibly wear, all the blankets he'd ever need, socks that were never opened. But he loved that once in a while, one of us would go over and do a bit of his laundry for him, or fix and share a meal. But mostly, getting him comfortable patio chairs that wouldn't scoot when he tried to sit down was terrific, along with extra pretty things to attract the birds. Good luck in your search for the right thing.

That sounds nice. Spending time with her like a nice outing somewhere, museum or such or whatever her outside likes are besides the garden. Look around at her environment...what does she really get happy about...what pleases her? Get her a classic novel and a promise to read it to her while she's doing her gardening or knitting. :D

A subscription to a women's magazine like "Bead & Button", "Better Homes & Gardens", "Cookbook Digest", Real Simple", "Town & Country" just to name a few. Even "National Geographic" if she has interest in the world. I think a magazine subscription is one of the best gifts anyone can receive because it's keeps coming for a whole year. And at her age, she's got enough pictures and knick-knacks! :D
