Do you want permanent waves or just every now and again?
For permanent, you'll have to go for a perm. I know the idea sounds daunting, but in the end, one perm isn't as bad and damaging as using styling products everyday.
What the other girls suggested about plaiting or braiding you're hair when it's wet also works, but if you have the same type of straight hair as my mother (she calls it horse hair, cause it goes straight no matter how often she styles it) then maybe leave some conditioner in you're hair when you braid it. Conditioner tends to go hard (much like mousse or hairspray, but isn't as damaging)
In the morning when you take the braids out, don't brush it to much, cause it might take the waves out.
Hope this helps, and hope you're hair comes out beautiful!

You can braid your hair wet and in the morning take it out. or give yourself a water perm with no products just wet hair and spiral rods. It will stay in longer with a spritz. There is such a thing sold at Beauty supplys called a double barrel curling iron that makes beautiful waves and lasts longer with spritz before you curl. Just don't use alot- the steam may burn.

first apply little mousse on a section of damp hair, then twist it up in a bun. secure with hair pins. do the same for the rest of yor hair. then after an hour. blast buns with hot air then unravel, then comb carefully with fingers not comb. then set with a little hairspray.

just take a rod then roll your hair on it and let it be for 30 minutes (after wash only) you will get good results but not permant

plait it when it's damp and go to bed with it like that. then just brush it through in the morning.

otherwise you could try those big fat velcro rollers.
