I have a 3 year old Golden Retriever. Every morning before we get up she wakes up and starts whining. She sleeps in a crate in the lounge and is fine for the rest of the night. It isnt because she needs to pee as when we take her out she is never desperate to go. We have tried ignoring her but as my wife and I both work we have to get up eventually, saying this though we did try a couple of times when we were off and she whined for over 3 hours!! If we go down and let her out she will just back back to sleep in the lounge. I know this is because she probably wants to be with us but we just need her to wait about 30 minutes later. We have tried putting a cover over the crate but it makes no difference and it isnt because something is waking her up. Any suggestions PLEASE!!!

We cant put them anywhere else as the house isnt that big, and this has been going on since she was a puppy.

If we take her out to pee and then go back to bed she starts whining, it is NOT because she needs to pee.

Does this dog absolutely need to spend the night in a care? Is she reliably house trained? If so, why not put a bed on the floor in your room. Goldens are very sociable dogs, you both work and this dog is alone all day. She's doing it because she's lonely, she's been locked up all night and when she wakes up in the morning she desperately wants out to do something and see someone. I don't believe you'll stop her whining (at least not without doing something that will make her afraid of you), so why not try leaving her out of the crate at night?

She's bored, she wants a pee and she wants to see you. How many creatures, human or otherwise, want to stay in their bed for half an hour or so after they wake up? (OK, teenagers don't count.) Seeing as she can't do anything about it herself and you chose to have a dog, I don't understand why you don't just let her out then go back to bed or whatever.
Letting her cry for 3 hours is unkind, especially as you were at home. She would have realised this, you know. Dogs are highly tuned to our timing which anyone who feeds a dog at regular times will know. And dogs very rarely just pee straight away. They like to run around and sniff things first.
Talk to your vet and see what they suggest. It's always best to get professional advice.
I maybe mistaken here but it doesn't sound like you've got children. I only mention it because if you haven't and one day do you'll wonder why you ever worried about this.

I have two dogs, and both were crate trained in the beginning. They both whined and it was terribly annoying. We eventually put the crates in the laundryroom where no noise could be heard from inside and they couldnt hear us as well. This allows you not to hear them when they whine and them not to hear you when you wake up. It took a while for my dogs to stop the whining, but they eventually do. Just dont give into them, as i believe that only encourages it. You might also try the garage, as long as it's not too hot or cold.

I feel your pain, my sister volunteers at a dog rescue center, and constantly brings home puppies who NEVER shut up or sleep through the night! My suggestion would be to give her something to chew on during the night to keep her entertained, and dont give into her whining (eventually, she WILL get the point that you're not her *****). Also, make sure all the lights are out, and there is no noise to keep her up. When you give into her whining, you're letting her get her way and shes learning that you will come if she continutes to screech long enough, so dont give in!

You keep your dog in a crate!.....well I don't know what is on the floor of the crate, but maybe your pet is just uncomfortable.....also, dogs are social animals and she just maybe lonely....especially as she is alone during the day if you both work.

Don't know if this will work . Wake her up several mornings before shes ready and she may get tired of it. You greeting her instead of her needing you. Dogs are pack animals they consider you part of the pack.

Is it possible there is something that happens outside your house around that time? Neighbors, cars other animals etc.? We have deer, raccoons, etc. that are around our house around 11:00PM & 5:00AM, if our dogs smell them they whine wanting out.

dogs get separation anxiety. they are pack animals and need contact. crating is great when you are away but not so great if you are home.
