Ok well I've been doing a japanese form of Martial Arts called Kobudo Kai for about seven years now and I still love and enjoy it. I just have a couple of questions and I hope you can help me.

For those of you in Melbourne, Australia, are there any like short, one day things where you can attend, try out and learn about a different style of martial art?
What are some ways I can increase my strength, power, accuracy and speed?

And finally i'd love to have a chat and meet with anyone(possibly around my age...i turn 16 this year so between 14 to 18 years or close) who does any form of martial arts and lives in the Melbourne area (Western suburbs would be great!) or if you live interstate or oveseas we could still chat online. If your interested please leave an answer with your details(age, style of martial arts, location and email address) and i promose i will get back to you as soon as i can!
Thanks!

"What are some ways I can increase my strength, power, accuracy and speed?"

Well, the key word here is practice. Learning the technique and movement required to exact its application will benefit you above say, doing weight lifting to increase strengh and power. For example a boxers power comes from the legs and hips, not the arms. The power and speed comes from mastering the technique, the accuracy from actual practice with another practitioner. Thats not to say that specific training won't help though. :)

There are excercises you can do to strenghen certain areas, Aikido practitioners will most certainly work on the wrists and forearms, thai kick boxers condition the legs as its the main weapon etc so it is all down to what you want to improve upon.

I guess doing some other martial arts will also assist, just to learn the basic philosophy behind its application. You will often find that other martial arts overlap with the concepts that are used in the one you are training in, anyway good luck with your training.

Many martial arts schools will let you watch or take free lessons to see if it's something you're interested in. There are also seminars that are put on to gain interest in their style or if a special guest sensei is coming to town to teach, etc. You should be able to meet someone your age at one of these events. Don't do it over the internet. There are too many wierdos out there that will pretend to be what they're not and you could get hurt.

Most new students look like they are moving in slow motion because they are not using the correct muscles to perform a technique. How to overcome this is difficult to explain in writing. However what one needs to do is only use the muscles that are extending the arm or leg in the direction of the technique and not use the contractor muscles. People tend to use the contractor muscles that inhibit movement and speed because the exectution of the technique looks and feels more powerful (although that is only an allusion). Also snap the technique and move from the hips and you will move faster.

When I started out into the martial arts you went from a white belt to a black belt and it took 5 to 7 years and to achieved your black belt. You must fulfill another major requirement and that is you also had to learn another totally un-related martial arts. As for your speed you can use a speed bag to help you with that. So I chose karate and akido. And that proved to be a fierce combination. I am now a Ju-Dan or sokie or tenth degree black belt. Yours In The Arts Kilroymaster.
