Perhaps because they've forgotten the real reason why they're suppose to be known as Christians. They've not sought the real Love of God, can't disply it, and have no understanding of it.

Don't be fooled, just because they say "I am christian", doesn't mean they are. Just means they want to think that they are. I think we live in an age where words have no power. Look at their actions to determine whehter those "christians" really are chrisitans to begin with. Sadly i think a lot of christians in America think that they are because their parents were, and they were born into a christian home. But as Nicky Gumble (who is the founder of Alpah course) says, saying you r a christian cause ur family is , is like saying "i am a hamburger" because u were born in McDonalds.
(don't ask me why someone would be born there, it's just an example).
Obviously anyone who is christian shouldn't be like that, since Jesus was a poor man as far as monetary status goes.
U know those kind of people are everywhere, not just in christianity.

Could be that some of the "rich Christians" get frustrated and annoyed from aggressive pan-handling of some of the poor. Perhaps some of the rich get tired of the poor trying to rob them, trying to burgle their homes, trying to use intimidation to "beg" for money, and some of the drug antics that many of the poor engage in. That's where many of the poor lose sympathy: too many engage in violent or destructive criminal activity. The fear generates hate. It is important to pray for those who hate one's self. A poor man might hate a rich man out of jealousy, but a rich man will hate a poor man because of fear of violence and harm to property. Not endorsing hatred of the poor here, just trying to explain how many poor people ruin their chances of obtaining support because of violence and other negative behaviours.

Elitism is the foundation for Judaism & Christianity.
If people didn't think they would get rich by being Jew or Christian, they would convert to something else.
And, what's the point of being rich if you can't flaunt it in front of poor people?
Islam is the only religion with which I'm familiar that prohibits such behavior and considers it a sin.

Because a new idea is spreading among the wealthier Christians recently. They are starting to think that their success is do to being favored by God. This makes those who are less fortunate less favored and thus worthy of scorn. If only they would act less sinfully, they would all be driving BMWs, right? Is this 'theistic materialism'?

They rationalize it. "My 'god' wants me to be rich! Only sinners are poor!"
That is the idiocy behind stuff like "the purpose driven life". It's all an attempt to avoid responsibility.
