Increased yeild.
Better quality, in terms of lesser defects.
Lesser revenue (labor) expense.

Negative Impact:-
Loss of employement, affecting the economy adversely.
Loss of creative/human perspective.

The goal in manufacturing a product would be to produce that item exactly as the one before it. And do this hundreds if not millions of times in a row. The key word here is repeatability.
Try doing that without the use of robotics,and plc controls, and modern technology.

There are 150 million employed in the USA now.

There wasn't 150 million citizens in 1940... looks like more employment if anything, swelling the economy immensly...

Engineering was automated since the PC came out: nobody uses triangles and compasses anymore, and the timeline for developing new products has become faster than ever, bringing out new and better products, and enabling creativity beyond dreams of those stuck in the pre-automation age...
