You can ingest 2nd hand smoke while riding in the car with him, which in turn can and does cause the same symptoms as if YOU were the one smoking. Even with the window down, there is no garuntee that all the smoke will exit the vehicle. Have a talk with him about trying NOT to smoke while you are in the car with him. Tell him that if he doesn't want to stop and wants to suffer the consequences of smoking, that you would prefer if he didn't help to shorten your life in the meantime.

Even if you don’t smoke but are exposed to second-hand smoke on a regular basis, your body will absorb nicotine and other harmful substances just as smokers’ bodies do. In addition, the longer you are around second-hand smoke, the greater the level of harmful substances in your body. As a result, you might have an increased risk of developing smoking-related disorders, including:

Lung cancer
Heart disease
Emphysema
Eye and nasal irritation
Asthma

Of course with all the lies being told about smoking, it would seem like it, but in truth, no. You should ask him politely not to do it in the car because it is an enclosed space, but outside, you have more chance of getting health problems, including cancer from the exhaust of all those vehicles and factories that are putting tons of smoke in the air every day.

Most likely not ... at least from second hand smoke. If you are in the car though, while he smokes, you are at risk. Plus anyone can get anything from environmental irritants such as smoke, depending on your immune system. So eat healthy, take antioxidant vitamins, and stay away from people who may affect your health.
Hopefully your stepdad's smoking won't affect your emotions, since that can be a drain on your immune system also having to deal with that all the time also. Read up on strengthening your immune system, plus ways to not get stressed out about negative family habits. You need to think about your own health.

Important to mention -- second hand smoke is WORSE than regular since you happen to get it without a FILTER!

If second hand smoke is worse than smoking yourself then more people would smoke right?I don't believe this crap.Everyone's going to die from something. You'd have a better chance of dieing from him filling the car with smoke and having a wreak from the obstructed view than lung cancer. Tell him to throw it out and save both your lives.

You should ask him to please not smoke with you in the car. There are some pretty good studies that show second hand smoke can be very dangerous. Since you say he only sometimes does this it may not be real dangerous--but why take the risk--and who wants to breath it--and who wants their hair and clothes to smell like it?

I am not a smoker but I feel this second hand smoke issue is made up by the anti-smoking groups.

Secondhand smoke is dangerous.

Everyone who has been within 100 meters of a smoker (even upwind of one) will immediately get cancer and die.

It is responsible for 84.65% of the anthropormorphic global warming as well.

Jeeze, people. All of the other crap that we are ingesting will surely kill us before second-hand smoke does. Talk about jumping on the bandwagon! Stay away from fast food and you'll be okay.
