My family is always asking me to keep practicing and to get the license soon so it will be easier for me to get to places. I want it too...but I just don't really have the skills BUT all I can do is practice until I feel confident! However, I don't see why people is making such a big deal if a person does not drive at all.
What I hate about cars is that people try to run you over with it while they are trying to make some kind of illegal turn! And they kill people/animals with it and is too chicken to admit their faults!

It's not a big deal at all, and if you don't feel ready for the responsibility(which you have thought through--good job) then putting more pressure on you to learn is just asking for trouble. You seem very sensitive and thoughtful, and intelligent. Remember, you can always learn to drive later on in life if you feel ready--there's no time limit

Driving or not driving is your own personal choice. If you live somewhere with good public transportation, then there's no real disadvantage to not having a driver's license. However, if you live somewhere that doesn't have reliable public trans, a driver's license and vehicle are very important.
Living here in Las Vegas, where the public bus system is ok, but not great, it's important for me to have a car because there are a lot of places here that the buses don't go. And even places that do have bus service, it sometimes takes three or four transfers to get where you're going, which means spending two or three hours on the bus. So in the end, it's easier to just have my own car so I can go where I want when I want and not have to waste all that time just sitting on a bus.
Here's another reason why it might be important to get a license (especially if your family is pushing you to do it): they may be getting tired of driving you around places. You have to realize that dropping you off somewhere and picking you up takes time out of their day that they could be doing something else. Plus it costs their gas. But mostly it's the time involved. When I lived in Long Beach, my girlfriend there lived about 20-30 minutes away. She didn't have her license or a car, and it was hard for her to take her toddler on a bus, so I had to pick her up all the time. There were a lot of times she wanted to go do something, but because I didn't want to drive (maybe it was late, or I didn't have enough gas to get there), we didn't. If she had her license and her own car, she could have come to me instead. We could have split the driving, or alternated, or something like that. But when I was the one always putting out for the gas, and I was the one always spending an hour of my life in the car there and back, it got old and it ended up being among the reasons we broke up.

Dear Friend,
Drving is associated with the following :
1> The Driving License serves as an offical legal document which is helpful in all situations in case of identity verifiction
2> Driving is considered by many a " A COOL MUST KNOW THING" to impress opposite sex in case if you are in your teens
3> IF you know how to drive , itsmore than good enough - U never know when you might need to drive in cases of real emergency when you are all alone .
4> Your famlily is right . As long as you live in a metro where Public Transport is good u dont need to worry BUT the minute you step to smaller cities , you will realise Public transport is not good and people mostly rely on persoanl vehicles while driving.
I agree with all your views but definitely its not a BIG DEAL. If you can afford your car to practice its fine, use that oppurtunity or else just make sure you know the basics so it might just be helpful to you in the future ( u never know)
Wish You Luck and HAPPY AND SAFE DRIVING

No.
The value of driving to you depends or your needs & the situation you are in. Nothing in isolation has a value - it's always compared to something else & within a certain context.
I learned to drive @ 18 but lived in a place with good public transportation. I rarely drove anywhere until I was 24 & moved somewhere where there was no public trans. Change of context led to change of value.
My boss @ work lived in Washington DC for 17 years without a car. He could drive just fine: there was no need to incur the unecessary expense in his situation.
Don't worry about how bad other people's driving is - beyond taking it into account while controlling your own vehical.
Get your liscence when you can, in preparation for when your situation changes. Do your best & don't worry. The biggest problem with learning most things is anxiety, which interferes with the learning process.
Safe driving!
;-)

Unless one lives in some place like New York City, which has its subway system, knowing how to drive is practically a neccessity. Even then, I would still consider it as an important part of being a fully functional, responsible adult in today's world.
Someone who is unable to drive has to go through life dependent on other people for their transportation. They will always have to bum rides from one person or another. And they will have to waste a lot of valuable time waiting for others to pick them up someplace or waiting until it's convenient for their ride to take them where they need to go. And what happens when you need to go somewhere that is totally inconvenient to everyone you know who does drive? Sooner or later, even family and good friends will probably at some point get annoyed at having to always serve as your chauffeur.
Driving a car is a big responsibilty. One needs to learn the traffic laws, the unwritten rules of the road, as well as learn the actual skills of driving a car which takes practice, practice, practice. Not to mention at least some basics on how you take care of a car.
But remember that no one is born knowing how to drive. Everyone has to learn how to do it sometime. But it is something you can learn. And the day will come when you will look back and remember thinking that it seemed like it was too big a challenge for you, and it'll give you a good chuckle.
Also, be aware that people making illegal turns don't intend to run someone over (if they do). And no decent person deliberately tries to run over animals. At any rate, you are not responsbible for other people's actions. Be alert yourself, keep your eyes on the road, and keep your mind on your driving as well as the other vehicles around you. These are the best ways to see to it that an accident won't happen to you.
Lastly, it's good to mention that knowing you can drive, and having a vehicle to drive, gives you a sense of freedom that
someone who has to depend on others to go places can not even imagine.
Best of luck to you and happy driving!

Once you realize the truth of public transportation, you won't be able to get your license fast enough. I've taken the bus to college and home for the past few months and after a long time of not driving, I've been practicing every single day so that I can get my license as soon as humanly possible.

lOOK AT WHAT YOU GET WHEN DRIVE.
Car payments or lay out big cash
Insurance
gas
tires,
oil change
maintenance
brakes
wiper blades always go bad in middle of rainstorm
other cars aim at you
traffic jams
other cars not use turn signal make angry bad for health.
My grandmother never drive, never have license.
She was healthy and lived by herself at age 104. Could still walk to store!
Why? None of the tension and frustration of driving.
Me? I love to drive but often get mad at stupid drivers who don't obey rules of road. Bad for my health.

Your family PROBABLY wants you to either get a job or get to school.
MY son thought when he turned 18 life was going to be SWEET!
Just lay around, relax and watch TV all day. I promptly informed HIM that his future was either: college and a free ride OR no college=no more free ride and the rent is due on the first. AKA GET A JOB!
SURPRISE!!!!!!!!
