yep, much of it is....
exegesis, hermeneutics are approaches to biblical interpretation that often reveal the meaning, intent, the message that lies under the words....and to a degree, makes much of the material much more understandable/reasonable...especially OT writings..
the different motifs, writings styles, Midrashic materials, legal writings, poetry, "prophetic" literature [ remember, in the OT, prophets always wrote after the event that they are "prophesying" about]
while a more rigorous approach tends to remove the godhead from the bible/removes the "revealed" aspect; it does make sense of much of the writings....
as one of my first theology professors said
the difference between Zeus and Christ???
most people don't believe in Zeus anymore....
escapism? sure....
a "big" book to justify the 10 commandments? maybe
or the christian ....2 commandments??? that too....
a "divine" source for the "golden rule" ? yep
so...take what you want from the stories...if anything..
the "living a good life" and "being a nice person" are probably the important concepts...everything else is window dressing

Well, depends on how it is read. If it is read like a fairy tale, it is escapism. If it is interpreted by historians and theologians, it does not offer much escape at all. In fact, it draws some hard lines.

I'm sorry, you SOMETIMES get that feeling? Newsflash. Most rational, sensible, clear-thinking people already know that and have always known it. You're just coming around to this now?
