I might suggest that you see a doctor, and possibly request a referral to a sleep disorders laboratory. (Sleep labs are found at about all major university medical centers as well as many regional hospitals.) Sedative-hypnotic medications (prescription sleep aids) might also be recommended by your doctor to help you re-regulate your sleep/wake cycle. They should not be taken longer than directed because of the risk of dependence.

Sometimes your body's natural circadian rhythm gets out of adjustment. This is particularly often a problem for shift workers. Try relaxing home therapies at night, like a warm bath, a glass of milk, and a turkey sandwich. (Turkey contains tryptophan, which helps you sleep.) Some people find that chamomile tea helps them relax and fall asleep, but be careful with chamomile if you have plant allergies (since the tea is made from the flowers of the chamomile plant).

The most important thing to do is to establish a regular bedtime and stick to it. Don't use the bedroom for anything stressful, like paying bills or doing homework, because it can create negative associations in your subconscious mind. If you can't fall asleep within 30 minutes, get up and engage in a relaxing activity for a while, then go back to bed and try again. Don't just lay in bed staring at the ceiling because that only creates more anxiety.

Remember, if you can't solve this by yourself, you should get medical help. There can be medical problems that are causing this, such as certain endocrine disorders or depression. There is no shame in asking a doctor to help you find out why you can't sleep at night, and to help you to change things so you can rest better.
