I think my cat got worms from my neighbor's new dog. Is there anything I can do without seeing a vet? They're not open on Sundays and I am so disgusted... you need some kind of prescription for worming medicine, right?

So the wormers sold in stores are the same as the stuff the vet would prescribe for her?

It really depends on the type of worm that she has. Tapeworms are the most common and they look like small grains of rice in the stool. They are caused by ingesting flea eggs that then hatch in the intestines. The over the counter medications may make her sick and although they are disgusting it can wait until Monday and then the vet will be able to give her a quick injection.

Hartz makes wormer for cats. It is in liquid form and is sold along with the cat food and toys at WalMart. It costs about six bucks a bottle. One teaspoon tomorrow, one ten days from tomorrow, and then once a month, your kitty will be worm free. Don't worry about oding the cat. You won't. The medicine is safe enough, it just basically cleanses out their digestive system, and leaves them worm free.

It really depends on what type of worms your cat has. Most of the dewormers you find at the Petco or Petsmarts, or at K-Mart or WalMart is basically for round worms (maybe hook worms). Tapeworm is a little more difficult to kill.

Best bet would be it to take a fecal sample to the vet or even better, if you can collect the actual worms to bring to the vet.

It depends on what type of worm it has, you should call the vet first and describe the worm. More than likely you will have to buy something from the vet.If your neighbor doesnt clear up their dog you will keep getting the worms. they live in the ground and are hard to get rid of.

They sell different types of wormers in the stores, don't know how good they are. Best to take your kitty to the vet for a check up.

There are alot of Worm medications out there. Cats are not always favorable about taking them though. I use a liquid dewormer that doesn't taste too bad. there is no script need for most dewormers. I get mine at Wal-Mart, Target, or Petco.

Check out your local pet store that is open on the weekends. You may not be able to do anything for kitty right now, but probably will tomorrow.
